Kurzbeschreibung

The original and classic The Collected Poems of Dylan Thomas is available once again, now with a brilliant new preface by Paul Muldoon.

The Collected Poems of Dylan Thomas contains poems that Thomas personally decided best represented his work. A year before its publication Thomas died from swelling of the brain triggered by excessive drinking. (A piece of New Directions history: it was our founder James Laughlin who identified Thomas’ body at the morgue of St. Vincent’s Hospital.)

Since its initial publication in 1953, this book has become the definitive edition of the poet’s work. Thomas wrote “Prologue” addressed to “my readers, the strangers” — an introduction in verse that was the last poem he would ever write. Also included are classics such as “And Death Shall Have No Dominion,” “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night,” and “Fern Hill” that have influenced generations of artists from Bob Dylan (who changed his last name from Zimmerman in honor of the poet), to John Lennon (The Beatles included Thomas’ portrait on the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band); this collection even appears in the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road when it is retrieved from the rubble of a bookshelf.

     And death shall have no dominion.

     Dead men naked they shall be one

     With the man in the wind and the west moon;

     When their bones are picked clean and their clean bones gone,

     They shall have stars at elbow and foot;

     Though they go mad they shall be sane,

     Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again,

     Though lovers be lost love shall not:

     And death shall have no dominion.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Poetry Master For The Ages 10. August 2013

Dylan Thomas extrapolated something wonderful from the writing style developed by the Poet-Priest Gerard Manley Hopkins. Part of this extrapolation included the unique Thomas ability to make readers of his work feel they were living in the environments he so accurately describes. The work of Dylan Thomas has ways of penetrating the innermost recesses of people engaged in ordinary occupations. Thomas also has a wonderful organ-pipe voice leading to my advice that anyone interested in Thomas should read this book first, then listen to his many recorded readings. Someone who hears his voice first might be disappointed in his written work.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A 20th-Century Magician 29. November 2013

Dylan Thomas was a word magician and a performer. I think that his early popular success had the ironic effect of hurting his reputation in certain critical circles such as the one that sprang up around the fearful Cambridge Calvinist F. R. Leavis. Now that the principals have mostly departed and the dust has settled, it seems clear to me that Thomas, at least in a handfull of poems, was that rare thing in the twentieth century, a great poet. If you are interested in poetry and haven't read Thomas, try this book! None of his contemporaries had Thomas's gift for making the language do new things. He is probably not the greatest poet of his century, but he is unique. There has never been an evocation of childhood like "Fern Hill," to take only the most famous example. This is a poem that can be read for fifty years without growing old. If you're part of the minority that still reads poetry, you really should read Thomas.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Dylan Thomas channeled God's thoughts and feelings 11. Januar 2014
Von Rainys A. Blekaitis - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Dylan Thomas was a genius. He was a poet-vessel for God's thoughts and feelings. There were, and are, other great poets, but none of them greater than Dylan Thomas.

His poetry is still vibrant and relevant
It is a pity that he drunk himself into the grave
