McNeely was an official White House photographer during the years 1993-98 and a good one. Just about all there is to this book is pictures of President Clinton, alone or with others, appearing as he wants to be seen when going about his business. Sometimes a shot looks sort of candid, like the one of Bob Hope ostensibly showing Bill "how to chip" at the Bob Hope Classic. Once, the president is almost entirely obscured by the legs of onlooking staffers, and a couple of times he appears only onscreen or in a portrait, not bodily. And, jiminy, what's this? Here are Ron and Nancy, and George and Barbara, occupying entire frames, sans Bill! But not to worry, the Reagans and Bushes are just in two panels of a triptych. Bill and Hillary occupy the third, looking solemn at Nixon's funeral. You gotta give it to Clinton: he's photogenic. Give it to McNeely, too, for these are all beautiful, kinetic black-and-white images. Gore--or Bush--could do worse than keep McNeely on the payroll. Ray Olson

Adult/High School-As the official White House photographer from 1993 to 1998, McNeely had free access to document the Clinton Administration. From the 20,000 rolls of film he shot, he offers 200 of his best candid photos, all black and white. They show a wide range of presidential activities, from speech-writing sessions and meetings with world leaders to private family moments. Only very brief captions accompany the central photo section, but further insights are provided in a lively introduction by historian Douglas Brinkley and an interesting afterword by McNeely himself. Unfortunately, this layout and the lack of an index challenge readers to appreciate fully the photographic qualities and stories inherent in the photos, and make it difficult to find specific subject matter. For example, one photo shows Clinton and Gore in a strikingly relaxed and personal moment with the Dalai Lama "in Vice President Gore's office." Over 100 pages later, another picture shows an uncomfortable-looking Clinton with the president of China in a highly formal meeting "in the Blue Room." Both are fascinating images, but to realize their full implications, or even to find them, readers must read both introduction and afterword, awkwardly flipping back and forth to the photos referred to in the texts. Still, whether it is simply browsed for its human interest, appreciated for its photographic art, or read and studied for the insight it provides into both history and photojournalism, this is a valuable resource for citizens, students, or photography buffs.-Christine C. 8 Jahre lang saß Clinton im Weißen Haus. Acht sehr lange, aber auch sehr kurze Jahre. Seinen ersten Wahlkampf habe ich als Schüler verfolgt, seinen zweiten als Student. Zu sagen dass ich den Eindruck habe, die Zeit sei unglaublich schnell vergangen ist banal. Das Aufschlagen des Buches von Robert McNeely war eine Art Spaziergang durch diesen Jahren. Dabei fand ich besonders die "private views" sehr gut: Clinton vor einer wichtigen Besprechung, nach einer Pressekonferenz: mit Al Gore, Hillary oder anderen Personen aus seinem Umfeld. Blitzartig wusste ich wieder ganz genau was wo passiert war und sah in Clintons oder auch Gores Augen die Spannung, die Angst vor einem wichtigem Ereignis. Clinton hat wirklich einiges Miterlebt und aktiv Mitgestaltet. Vergisst man immer gerne, nach der Lewinsky Geschichte. Dieses Buch ist ein Beweis dafür, das Clinton als einer der bedeutenden Präsidenten des letzten Jahrhunderts in die Geschichte eingehen wird. Und die Photos von Robert McNeely sind qualitativ wirklich gut.

Classic B&W photographs that reveal many aspects of Clinton

Beautiful black and white photographs that document the many aspects of the human side of President Clinton. Each photograph tells a story, perhaps unlike the Public Relations story we have been fed.
I was impressed with the nonstaged real life messages these pictures unfold. Many photographs you would otherwise never see and therefore may know of a small section of the Clinton years.
As much as I enjoyed the gala events and the black tie functions that are part of this collection, I also enjoyed the more relaxed normal everyday shots. So much has been said about the marriage of Hillary and Bill Clinton, negative things, these photographs show many one on one personal moments. It would be hard to view these pictures without coming to the conclusion that these two people are quite fond of one another.
Overall this documentaion of photographs shows an all around man both from a Presidential angle and from that of simply a man, a human being.
Well done and makes for a nice slice of history and an excellent coffee table book. A great conversational piece!

Fabulous book!

"The Clinton Years" is a fabulous book with countless, priceless photographs of the Clinton Presidency. There are a wide variety of photographs documented in this book, which reflect Bill Clinton's leadership in the White House over the last 8 years, that are inspiring. The images of William Jefferson Clinton shown are not only in the role of President, but as an individual as well - showing the human side of our President.
As they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words," that most certainly is the case with this book!

Great photos of the presidency

This is a beautiful book documenting the life of a President. The photographer, Robert McNeely, did a great job in choosing photographs that depict the life of a president. It is apparent that McNeely choose shots that he thought would draw a reader into the book, versus standard press shots or pictures that have ran in thousands of magazines and newspapers. I was a disappointed that McNeely didn't elaborate more on the pictures and tell about the events that led to the picture being taken or what happened after the picture was taken. McNeely does give some insight into the Clinton presidency in the endnotes of his book. In all a great book and a different view of the presidency.
