What irony that one of Calcutta's most devastating slums should be known as Anand Nagar, ``the City of Joy.'' This is a powerful book that made me feel what life might be like, day to day, as one of the poorest people on earth. Its accumulation of unsparing detail, and refusal to opt for feel-good resolutions, make a strong impact. Calcutta is simply beyond verbal description, but Lapierre does his best to render it a real and tangible place to the reader.
I gave it only three stars because it has no subtlety, and at times sensationalizes Calcutta's problems. I've always had qualms about novels and films that wring entertainment out of human suffering, but this book usually avoids being such an offender. At times, also, the Indian characters are portrayed with condescension; real street people in Calcutta are a lot less childlike and more like you and me than the naifs Lapierre describes. Besides these, the only flaw was the wooden prose style, which may have been the fault of the English translation.
All in all it is a rich and inspiring testament to the resiliance of the human spirit--not literature, but outstanding fiction/non-fiction. I read it while volunteering in Calcutta, so other readers unfamiliar with the city and its problems might enjoy it more.

Lapierre beschreibt einen der trostlosesten Orte Kalkuttas - und somit wahrscheinlich einen der trostlosesten Orte auf diesem Planeten - derart intensiv und realitätsnah, dass sich niemand, wirklich niemand dem entziehen kann. Gleichzeitig widmet der Autor viele der 71 Kapitel jeweils ganz besonderen Eigenarten Indiens, speziell Ostbengalens, dessen alles verschlingender Moloch Kalkutta ist. Mal geht er näher auf das undurchschaubare Kastensystem ein, mal werden wir Zeuge monatelangen "Feilschens", wenn es darum geht, zwei Menschen, die noch Kinder sind, miteinander zu verheiraten (natürlich ohne dass diese hierbei auch nur eine Silbe mitzusprechen hätten geschweige denn einander vorher zu Gesicht bekämen!!); weiter lernen wir, was passiert, wenn Kalkuttas Müllmänner während der Regenzeit streiken, über die unbeschreiblichen Zustände in Indiens Krankenhäusern, die überall präsente Korruption, dem Nebeneinander von arm und reich usw. Und immer und immer wieder wird die furchtbare, die schier ausweglose, erschütternde Armut beschrieben, die von den Bewohnern Kalkuttas mit niemals für möglich gehaltenem Humor, mit Liebe, Würde und Anstand ertragen wird. Dies ist die eigentliche Botschaft des Buchen und davon können und sollten wir lernen!

The author weaves together the stories of a family who moved from the drought-starved countryside in search of a better life, a young doctor from the United States, and numereous others to paint a rich, textured picture of unbelievable suffering and yet, incredible humanity.
This book made me stop over and over to contemplate how lucky I was to have been born where and when I was - in relative wealth, comfort, and freedom beyond the wildest dreams of the majority of the world's population.
Go ahead and see the movie if you want too, but not until well after you've read and absorbed the book.
