Lewis Mumford's massive historical study brings together a wide array of evidence--from the earliest group habitats to medieval towns to the modern centers of commerce (as well as dozens of black-and-white illustrations)--to show how the urban form has changed throughout human civilization. His tone is ultimately somewhat pessimistic: Mumford was deeply concerned with what he viewed as the dehumanizing aspects of the metropolitan trend, which he deemed "a world of professional illusionists and their credulous victims." (In another typically unrestrained criticism, he dubbed the Pentagon a Bronze Age monument to humanity's basest impulses, as well as an "effete and worthless baroque conceit.") Mumford hoped for a rediscovery of urban principles that emphasized humanity's organic relationship to its environment. The City in History remains a powerfully influential work, one that has shaped the agendas of urban planners, sociologists, and social critics since its publication in the 1960s.

Mumford doesn't want to give a concise picture of the "City in History"....but he does! From the very early urban settlements to the modern (1960s !) compartments of urban living a line is drawn that seems to point out the single line of modernization in life and living-conditions of men. But this only seems so...In fact, Mumford points out the many points of urban growth and progress in which we believed and now are somewhat betrayed. This book is not a solemn account on what today's cities are, but - if one reads between the lines and the photo-material - what the cities in thew future could be. A very profound study with lots of thoughts which probably seemed "weird" in the days of its first imprssion, but making it worth reading in present days. To sum up: A book worth buying it.

This is the definitive study of communities as a whole -- from the prehistoric societies like Catal Huyuk, to the Greek poleis, to the metropoleis of today. Accurately worded and incredibly well-written, this book inquires into the very function of cities in human civilization, their influence on local life, etc. Bound to prove an awesome source of general data as well as the specifics, this book is a major work and is a certain must-have.
