Certain writers absolutely defy categorisation – and China Miéville is most definitely of that rarefied company. His prose is exhilarating, poetic, coruscating with ideas and atmosphere – and it has enhanced a body of work that has almost no parallels in modern writing. Heretofore, if Miéville has brushed shoulders with any identifiable genres, they are those of fantasy and science fiction – which makes his remarkable new book, The City and The City, such a surprise. The author’s publishers compare this novel to Philip K Dick, Raymond Chandler and 1984 – which at least gives a series of corollaries for this book, however tentative. There are elements here of the crime thriller, but very much refracted through Miéville’s highly individual imagination.
The body of a murdered woman is discovered in the remarkable, crumbling European city of Besźel. Such a crime is par for the course for Inspector Tyador Borlú, who is the premier talent of the Extreme Crime Squad – until his investigations uncover evidence that bizarre and terrifying forces are at work – and soon both he and those around him will be in considerable peril. He must undertake an odyssey, a journey across borders both physical and psychical, to the city which is both a complement and rival to his own, that of Ul Qoma.
Like all of China Miéville’s work, The City and The City will not be to everyone’s taste – the very individuality of the prose and the surrealistic inventiveness will not attract those preferring more prosaic fare. But for readers who hanker after untrammelled imagination – and look for literary fare unlike anything they have read before (even, it has to be said, by Miéville himself), then this is a journey to be undertaken. Das Buch ist schwer zu rezensieren, ohne zu viel von der Handlung und auch der Genialität des Settings zu verraten.
The City & the City spielt in einer erfundenen kontemporären osteuropäischen Stadt, und zwar einer politisch geteilten Stadt, die in zwei strikt getrennten Staaten zerfällt. Die fantastische Art, wie diese Trennung praktisch existiert, ist wieder ein leuchtendes Beispiel für Miévilles fast geniale Kreativität und Intelligenz. Die Trennung lässt sich jedenfalls als Gleichnis auf die menschliche selektive Wahrnehmung lesen - mehr kann hier nicht gesagt werden, ohne dem Leser das Vergnügen zu nehmen, die Art der politischen Teilung der Stadt durch die Lektüre selbst allmählich kennenzulernen.
Protagonist und Ich-Erzähler des Romans ist Inspektor Borlú, der im Mordfall einer Frau ermittelt, welcher bald politische Dimensionen anzunehmen scheint und einerseits auf eine Gruppe verborgener Meister, die sich zwischen den Hälften der Stadt bewegen und beide kontrollieren, verweist, und andererseits auf Extremisten der Wiedervereinigung wie der strikten Trennung der beiden Staatengebilde. Seine Ermittlungen führen Borlú in die andere Hälfte der Stadt und letztlich in die verborgene Welt zwischen den Städten.
Ein hochintelligentes, teils parabelhaftes und höchst empfehlenswertes Buch, ganz besonders, aber keineswegs nur, für Freunde von Kriminalfällen und geheimen Verschwörungen durchzogen vom Verdacht des Übernatürlichen.

Die zwei Punkte gibt es von mir für die interessante Parabel auf die Segretion in unserer Welt und die selektive Wahrnehmung der Menschen im Alltag. All das ist, wie meine Vorredner schon schrieben, schön in einer sich langsam entwickelnden Krimi-Geschichte mit Schauplatz in den beiden phatastischen Städten verpackt.
Aber das war's auch schon. Auf eine wirkliche (eigenstädige) Geschichte, fernab der zähen Vorstellung der Welt, geschweige denn Spannung wartet man vergebens. Ich würde das Buch, selbst als Mieville-Fan(!), jedenfalls niemandem empfehlen.

The City & The City is ostensibly a first person detective novel about trying to solve a murder that occurred in two cities that co-exist in the same space . . . but which social convention requires be treated as though they are quite far apart. The mystery is there to help you accept the fantasy of two cities deliberately ignoring one another while being perfectly aware of each others' existence. To me, this wasn't as much a fantasy as a commentary on the trend toward isolation in modern urban and suburban living. You might be surrounded by people, but you will do your best to act as though they are not there.
From that perspective, the book is a terrific exploration of how deliberate choices to limit our knowledge causes us miss out on the potential of what's in front of our noses and all around us. I would have graded it higher, but I found that Mr. Mieville's treatment of the central theme was much too drawn out to be fully rewarding. It felt a little to me like the times when someone has told me a joke for which the punch line was obvious, but who insisted on telling me the punch line again and again . . . hoping I would laugh aloud on one of the tries.
The detective story is more interesting and amusing near the beginning than near the end, the opposite of most good police procedurals. I did enjoy Mr. Mieville's taking his story seriously enough to develop the detailed complications that he fantasy world must contain.
I don't normally read much fantasy, but here I thought that the fantasy served its purpose better than traditional contemporary fiction writing would have.
