Melody Carlson at her best

Every year I look forward to a Christmas story by Melody Carlson (similar to the anticipation of a new Debbie Macomber Christmas story). The difference in the two authors is that Carlson's is heavily Christian in nature. So if you have not read any of Carlson's novels you will need to know that I think some might think them slight "preachy" but I really enjoyed this one. It is about a strange (in fact, weird) stranger that comes to town and outbids a local for a building on main street of this little town.
If you have lived in a small town, you will know how typical the reactions are of the locals to a stranger. The locals want to get rid of her and take actions to do so; however, there is a twist to this story. I do not want to give the twist away but although one can pretty much surmise the essence of the story (and Carlson is for the most part, fairly transparent in her writings in all of her novels), it is still a joy to see the characters react to this stranger and to determine for one's self just who or what this strange person is.
I read this book in a couple of settings within a 24 hour period. I just could not leave it alone. This for me is the hallmark of a good story. This book has certainly started off my holiday reading season on a good note!

This is a tale of a small town, but the troubles and problems are those of anybody. However there is the addition of the mysterious stranger - Matilda comes with solutions. The question is will the town accept them.
We have all the typical small town problems - someone new and different, not conforming... except this is not just only small town behavior. There are rumors of what this mystical woman is. Is she a witch, or an aging hippie who will deal in drugs, or someone who will sue the town?
What we have is lost and found peace of heart and of course love discovered which ties in with the spirit of Christmas.
The story takes place just before Christmas, and part of the worry is that the Christmas shopping season will be ruined and that the angst against Matilda is not creating an aura of love and goodwill. The purpose of the tale does have a Christian flavor, especially of forgiveness. We are not told the whole story of even some of the main character's life changing events; but it is still a nice little Christmas story.

Christmas story with no substance and very little Christmas

I picked up "The Christmas Shoppe" at the library because I have enjoyed many of Carlson's books in the past, including her Christmas stories. I was disappointed.
I know this is a novella and not a full-length book but character development was almost non-existent, there was a stilted attempt to fit this into a Christmas theme, dead end plot lines. I do expect some Christmas in a Christmas story. I think this could have been a good story if it had been expanded just a bit. And I won't quit reading Carlson's books just because of one weak book. But I do hope the next ones are stronger.
