Pressestimmen

"The book provides the most comprehensive and accessible account of changing Chinese cities so far. The coverage is impressively wide, assuming little prerequisite knowledge of China's historical and geographical contexts. Wu and Gaubatz artfully balance the level of empirical details and generalization and divide the chapters into self-contained and readable pieces, and together they provide an encyclopaedic source of rich information for researchers for many years to come. Some chapters such as infrastructure and environment cover cutting-edge topics about the Chinese city, and others on housing and urban spatial structure reflect well established researches on urban China." Fulong Wu, Bartlett Professor of Planning, Bartlett School of Planning, University College London. "Comprehensive, detailed, and proficiently explored! Wu and Gaubatz provide a major study of Chinese cities, discussing the history, the social-spatial transformations from the traditional, to the planned, and market economies through the lens of marketization, industrialization, and migration. They also review the globalization process that is affecting major trade of goods, capital, and technology in China. Students as well as scholars will use this as a textbook for their China studies." Karen R. Polenske, Peter de Florez Professor of Regional Political Economy, Department of Urban Studies and Planning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "The book is well organized: each of the thirteen chapters starts with sets of questions, guiding the comprehension of the entire chapter. The book clearly explains how marketization, decentralization, industrialization, migration, and globalization help shape contemporary urban systems in China." Yanmei Li, Florida Atlantic University, USA "The authors have succeeded well in providing a thoughtfully conceived, well-organized, clearly written, and carefully executed account of the modern Chinese city and the essential processes involved in its growth and change. As an accurate and well-documented account of one of the great processes of human change underway during the last half-century, this book is essential reading for students, professionals, China specialists, and urbanists from a variety of disciplines. I highly recommend it." - Clifton W. Pannell, The AAG Review of Books, Department of Geography, University of Georgia, USA

Kurzbeschreibung

This book is anchored in the spatial sciences, including geography, urban studies, urban planning, and environmental studies. It offers a comprehensive survey of the evolving urban landscape in China, covering such topics as history and patterns of urbanization, spatial and regional context, models of urban form, social-spatial transformation, economic restructuring, urbanism and cultural dynamics, housing and land development, environmental issues, and challenges of urban governance. It also shows how the character and complexity of the Chinese city both conform to and defy conventional urban theories and the experiences of cities elsewhere around the world. Illustrated case studies in each chapter ground the discussion and introduce readers to the diversity of cities and urban life in China.

Most chapters also are rooted in context and can be used as stand-alone course materials, with suggested references for further reading. Drawing on years of research experience and keen observations of the triumphs and problems in China’s cities, the authors uncover urban dynamism and complexity amid dramatic changes in the Chinese economy and society. They also explore the consequences of current development paths and emerging technologies on urban economies, the people, and the environment.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good Text Book on the Chinese City 9. Januar 2014
Von Peter Ciurczak - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
One of the most detailed and wide ranging analyses of Chinese Cities around, Weiping's book delves into the various forces shaping Chinese cities today, as well as how they will continue to be shaped in the future. Migration, infrastructure, environment and 'the state' are all covered with aplomb, including an analysis of how they got to be that way. It is quite functional as a textbook on the subject, and extraordinarily well supported with pages of references accompanying each chapter. If anything, a further discussion of the subject of Chinese 'ghost cities' would be interesting, and a greater examination of urban cultural mores. Still, a good book all in all, and well worth recommending if you happen to be interested in the subject - and a great springboard to even more in-depth and specific works.
