Pressestimmen

“For sheer skill in storytelling and world building, for wit, for strikingly intelligent development of the concept of telepathy, above all, for continuous concern for people, Bradley has put some more famous sagas in the shade.” — Chicago Sun-Times

“This is the best Darkover novel in a long time…. It’s a tale of culture clash, in classic Darkover style, a delightful return to a fascinating world, and a great read.” — Locus (for Exile's Song)

“This new entry in Bradley's venerable series is an almost unalloyed pleasure from beginning to end and one of the few recent Darkover novels that someone unfamiliar with the series can pick up and get into immediately.” — Booklist (for Exile's Song)

“[The Alton Gift] is a must for fans of the series and reads as if Deborah has been channeling Marion’s spirit.” — Center City Weekly Press

“Bradley's consummate skill at presenting complex political intrigue side-by-side with acute personal drama makes her Darkover series both involving and intricate.” — Library Journal (for Traitor's Sun)

“Ms Bradley spins a mesmerizing tale with masterful craftsmanship. Filled with rousing adventure, intriguing possibilities and fascinating characters.” — Romantic Times (for The Shadow Matrix)

Continuing the Legacy of Darkover-highly recommended 5. März 2013
Von Marie A. Parsons - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
The Children of Kings is a worthy successor in the continuing story of the world of Darkover.

Darkover, as created by Marion Zimmer Bradley, was colonized by humans who, after generations of living on this strange alien world, and a few incidents of mating with the indigenous alien chieri, now possess psychic talents and abilities. While their own society has become somewhat medieval in feel--with feudal loyalties given to the now noble Comyn families and using swords and daggers- the Darkovan humans have been drawn back into galactic contact with the rest of the human Federation. The Federation, with its starships, technology of metal and blasters, sees Darkover as a precious possession and wants to own it.

Deborah J Ross has united all the magnificent elements that have made Darkover so wondrous. Characters like Gareth, the protagonist of this novel who could be King himself, or like his aunt Silvana/Stelli, the firstborn child of Regis Hastur and his Linnea fostered by chieri, rise from feeling unworthy, unwanted, out of place, to realizing they have and can make choices that affect and shape their entire world. Characters like Merach, a man of high honor and dignity-- to some is little more than a dusty desert savage--yet he sees his way to helping his lord form new alliances that will change Darkover for generations.

Some must choose how, or if, to choose weapons--whether these are blasters that could level an entire city, or are psychic abilities that could bring down a starship. Some must choose to see past the strange other, whether that is a Dry-Town savage lord or a scion of an often mentally incompetent noble line.

Gareth begins this story as the un-confident prince who is certain everyone thinks he will never amount to anything, or, want to use him as a weakling puppet. So he leaves his home secretly, half-hoping only for adventure, but eventually finds that he holds the key to saving not only his home city, but can bring about an alliance never before attempted, a bond between two cultures. Along the way, Gareth also finds that love can also be his, not just mere simpering romantic love, but a love of strength, acceptance, and fervent devotion.

Darkover stories have always at their heart been about transcendant acceptance-not only one's own acceptance of who and what one is, and not only the acceptance, of one, by others. Darkover's tale of acceptance is the story of how, in the very act of accepting oneself and of the other--which too often is perceived as an act of weakness or simple naivete--instead, brings about a unity of soul and spirit that carries with it immense power and purpose.

The Children of Kings definitely does not disappoint, in this regard. It opens another brilliant chapter into a world of future possiblities, where not only do humans travel between the stars, not only find destiny and heart's home in the strangest of places, but also, find that they can do anything wondrous, build anything marvelous, if they find the way to do it together.

Well done, Children of Kings. Be warned, once you begin this book you will want to continue through to the end.

Escape to Darkover again 7. März 2013
Von Annie - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
It was so nice to escape back to Darkover and the amazing people and culture that make for such good fantasy reading. Unlike other worlds that lose something over the years, especially when the creator dies, this series is still satisfying. The characters are well drawn, the plot and its resolution are well devloped and suspenseful and the blending of old favorite characters with new keeps the world fresh. Even fresher was the setting in the Dry Towns. I could not put the book down and am waiting eagerly for more adventures under the four moons.

fresh Darkover tale 5. März 2013
Von Harriet Klausner - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Mentored by his renowned grandmother Linea Storn-Hastur, the Keeper of Comyn Tower, Prince Gareth Elhalyn fears he will never live up to the accomplishments of his teacher or his famous grandfather Regis Hastur. However, his biggest worry comes from his concern that his inheritance is the legendary Elhalyn insanity.

Dreaming of freedom, he talks with his grandmother who encourages him to travel as a trader. Gareth heads to the feral Dry Towns where few will recognize a powerful Comyn lord. As a trader in Cathon, Gareth hears rumors of Dry Towners beyond Shainsa armed with Compact forbidden deadly Terran blasters. Gareth knows this is plausible even though the Terran Federation withdrew from their planet after a bloody interstellar war (see THE ALTON GIFT); as the outsiders considers the lost colony part of their empire and will arm enemies of the ruling party. He also concludes his mission is to verify this at a risk to his life as he heads to the most dangerous area of the most outlawed sector on Darkover; Dry Towners never pledged adherence to the Compact or the laran Comyn Lords.

The Children of Kings is a fresh Darkover tale due to the protagonist’s venture into a rarely mentioned location (see The Shattered Chain by the late Marion Zimmer Bradley) as the Dry Towns and their residents want nothing to do with the Comyn lords. Gareth is a terrific though somewhat typical Darkover hero as he struggles with his fears going insane while trying to learn the truth and if substantiated to find a way to prevent a deadly disaster. Darkover fans will relish Deborah Ross’ strong saga into a lawless lethal land.

An enjoyable return to Darkover 28. April 2013
Von Elf2060 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
"The Children of Kings" is the delightful science fiction/fantasy novel that adds to the impressive collection of Darkover novels set in the world created by the late Marion Zimmer Bradley. Author Deborah J. Ross has co-written multiple volumes that continue the saga of the denizens of the world which seems so primitive to those who travel in space yet has a wealth of undercurrents and resources. Gareth Marius-Danvan Elhalyn y Hastur has an influential lineage yet has always felt vaguely useless, despite being heir to the throne of the Seven Domains. His illustrious grandmother, Linnea Storn-Lanart, has given him basic training in the use of the formidable mental powers known as laran but she can see the discontent that leads him to pursue an adventure which may very well risk his life and she does what she can to mitigate some of the risk that he is taking. Gareth travels to the regions known as Dry Town where he learns more about the various peoples who wrest a life out of extremely harsh conditions but he makes a discovery that may very well destroy everything achieved with the Compact which demands the use of weapons which allow equal risk to wielder and foe. Darkover may no longer be free to remain isolated from the struggles playing out in space and Gareth may require extreme sacrifice from himself as well as from the unexpected allies he has acquired, including the enigmatic being known as Rakhal.

It is mind-boggling to realize the amazing contributions that science fiction maven and mentor Marion Zimmer Bradley contributed to the field over so many decades. I am a very long-time fan of the Darkover series although it has been many years since I first read the initial books. I was pleased to have the many hints that allude to all of the events that have led to this point where the planet that the locals call Darkover is purportedly isolated from the struggles being played out among various worlds although I must confess that I am very tempted to go back and re-read many of the original books. The events in this particular book can be read as a standalone volume but there are so many threads that are interconnected that it would be enriching to read some of the fascinating stories that predate the events of this one. I enjoyed many of the twists that are presented and was intrigued by the revelations about those enigmatic beings called the chieri but some of the rapidly shifting events get a little frenetic, especially toward the end of the book. Hopefully, this means that there are many more volumes to look forward to as Ms Ross very expertly continues to expound upon the impressive universe created by her friend and mentor, the great Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Boy Meets Girl. Girl Meets Girl. True Love Always Wins. 30. Juni 2014
Von Sylvia McIvers - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I liked the Darkover books. I really did. This book, on the other hand...

There are two plots. Which is more boring or cliched?

Our Intrepid Young Hero realizes that he'll never get any respect in the city, so he goes off for an adventure. Yada yada, he meets a girl, he meets foreigners, the girl is spunky, the strangers who know his family help him, the strangers who don't know his family try to use him or kill him. Or both. He manages to do magical things even though he's only half trained. When he gets into a situation that half kills him, he manages to mind-shout for help, which he - according to the in-universe rules - should not be able to do. Oh, he's special alright. And guess what? SpunkyGirl(tm) falls in love with him! Gosh, never saw that one coming.

Our Intrepid Young Hero's Grandmother once had to give up her baby because Reasons, and when she and Grandfather went to look for Baby, she was nowhere to be found. Now, after decades of searching, Grandma finds Daughter (who is Hero's aunt?) completely by accident, while both women are doing something slightly out of character for them. The plot-hole is gently glossed over in the emotional reaction. And just like the Hero's story, the Path of True Love(tm) runs rough, then smooth.

Yawn. This book is so formulaic, you can check off all the plot milestones on the list. And you can look at the checklist because the story is not emotionally gripping enough to make you forget that formulas exist for a reason.
