Kurzbeschreibung

3. November 1997
Since the beginning of human history Mars has been an alluring dream-- the stuff of legends, gods, and mystery. The planet most like ours, it has still been thought impossible to reach, let alone explore and inhabit.

Now with the advent of a revolutionary new plan, all this has changed. Leading space exploration authority Robert Zubrin has crafted a daring new blueprint, Mars Direct, presented here with illustrations, photographs, and engaging anecdotes.

"The Case for Mars" is not a vision for the far future or one that will cost us impossible billions. It explains step-by-step how we can use present-day technology to send humans to Mars within ten years; actually produce fuel and oxygen on the planet's surface with Martian natural resources; how we can build bases and settlements; and how we can one day "terraform" Mars-- a process that can alter the atmosphere of planets and pave the way for sustainable life.

"For our generation and many that will follow, Mars is the New World," writes Zubrin. This book went to press serendipitously, just as NASA was making its startling if heavily-qualified announcement that simple life may have once existed on the fourth rock from the sun. Zubrin doesn't spend an enormous amount of time arguing why Mars exploration is desirable -- we all want astronauts to go there, don't we? -- but rather devotes the bulk of this book explaining how it can happen on a sensible, bare-bones budget of $20-30 billion and a "travel light and live off the land" philosophy. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

The planet Mars is a world of breathtaking scenery, with spectacular mountains three times as tall as Mount Everest, canyons three times as deep and five times as long as the Grand canyon, vast ice fields, and thousands of kilometers of mysterious dry riverbeds. Lesen Sie die erste Seite

4.0 von 5 Sternen Firey Words Only Thing Burning Holes in Theory 26. Juli 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
Robert Zubrin lays out by far the most believable and technically feasible plan I've yet heard for space exploration in this masterpiece, backing it up with plethora tables, figures, and some (mostly pointless) photos. The book discusses a plan so flawless and effective that nothing can stand in the way of the reader lauding and accepting it. Mr. Zubrin does a good job of trying, though.

The book, in my opinion, is written far too much like a sales pitch, and not enough like a scientific discussion. Instead of curtly dismissing just about every plan, problem, and competitive idea that others put against the Mars Direct plan, I would have preferred a more mature and openly written approach that discussed in more detail alternatives to Mars Direct's exactitudes, the different ways of financing it, and the mission's size. After reading it, I felt like I wasn't given enough information to make a choice for myself that this was not only a GOOD way to go to Mars, but the BEST way.

In summary, reading the book was a bit like reading the American Constitution: vague in some areas, overly restrictive in others; but the underlying beauty of the ideas that were presented was obvious. I give Zubrin six out of five stars for his ingenuity and perseverance, and two out of five for his ability to present them. It all averages out to a very good book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen It can be done! 26. Juni 2000

It has been two or three years since I read the book but I feel compelled to write a review.

Robert Zubrin presents very convincing arguments that a manned mission to mars in the near future (before 2010) is feasable. Previously, estimates for a manned mission was in the range of $500 billion dollars. Zubrin argues that via a new approach, without any breakthroughs, such a mission would cost around one tenth that amount. With budget surplusses, hints of possible past life and recent water flows on mars, the possibility of a manned mission seems ever more compelling.

Zubrin explains many technical details without delving into jargon. I found his description of fuel production on the surface to be particularly interesting.

The author not only discusses a manned mission but a long term colonization of the planet.

I especially recommend this to any engineering student interested in space.

Robert Zubrin is a long-time advocate of space colonization and a former CEO of the National Space Society. He knows what he's talking about. "The Case for Mars" sets out the technological, economic, and -- most intriguingly -- political reasons for expanding human civilization off this planet. Zubrin's plans for terraforming Mars into a near-earthlike climate are the part of the book that has gotten the most attention. But his political rationale for Mars settlement -- that ultimately, freedom requires a frontier and the values that a frontier cultivates -- are the most inspirational part of the book from my perspective. An absolute must-read for space, or freedom, enthusiasts.
