Kurzbeschreibung

Thomas Watson left London two years ago and crossed the Atlantic to become a newspaper reporter in Philadelphia 1920s Philadelphia, a city that rivals Al Capone's Chicago for its crime and corruption. Why would he go so far from family and friends? Admittedly, he was trying to get away - away from the shadow of his famous father, Dr. John Watson, and his father s even more famous friend, Sherlock Holmes.

Shortly after Thomas leaves London, Sherlock dies, and Dr. Watson takes on the responsibility of caring for Sherlock's older brother, Mycroft. After two short years in which Thomas finds little success in journalism, Dr. Watson dies suddenly; though Thomas stands to inherit his father's estate, he is also saddled with the responsibility of Mycroft, who has mysteriously shown up in Philadelphia, ready to move in. Puzzled by this strange turn of events, Thomas takes a walk and suddenly finds himself caught up in the biggest story of his career a suspicious explosion at a speakeasy, which kills the owner and his card-playing buddies.

The principal suspect of the police is Basil Meridan, a former British butler whom Thomas befriends and Mycroft hires as a servant. Needled into making a bet with a rival reporter that he can solve the mystery, Thomas is immediately hampered in his investigation by his editor, who fires him for spending too much time on a dead-end story. As he attempts to recover from this setback, he is escorted against his will to a meeting with bootlegger Boo Boo Hoff and his goons. They also want to know who the killer is, and provide their own unique encouragement for Thomas to find the solution to the mystery. All this makes it necessary to for him to solve the mystery, or lose his money, his job, maybe even his life. From the scanty clues that Thomas compiles, Mycroft is able to solve the mystery, but he is tight-lipped about the solution after all, Thomas should be able to figure it out himself! But can Thomas discover the murderer before he becomes his next victim?

3.0 von 5 Sternen The Case of the Exploding Speakeasy 1. März 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
A wonderful continuation of the Sherlock Holmes series! Doyle would probably like it. The plot is a bit thick at times but the author came up with a unique twist to the family life of "Holmes and co." I won' reveal more - read and fins out for yourself.

5.0 von 5 Sternen You'll be hooked 2. Dezember 2013
Von John Kitchen - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
In The Case of the Exploding Speakeasy Dave Fessenden masterfully brings a welcome freshness to the Holmes/Watson stories while sustaining an endearing familiarity with the originals by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Recent TV and film efforts to revive the crime fighting pair prove a new generation’s appetite and interest in Holmes and Watson. Dave brings the story to a new generation with skill and flair. The character development is exceptional, the storyline engaging, the intrigue gripping, and the ending … well, lets just say, you’ll be surprised! I wholeheartedly encourage you to enjoy this new historical mystery. Let’s hope there will be more where this comes from!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Danger and Deduction--Seasoned with Wit! 1. Dezember 2013
Von V. Herlocker - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
David Fessenden's THE CASE OF THE EXPLODING SPEAKEASY transports the reader to 1926, Philadelphia, where Dr. John Watson's son, Thomas, is a cub reporter for the Herald--assigned to writing obits. When the local Speakeasy explodes, killing those inside,Thomas and another reporter have different ideas about who is responsible. Enter Mycroft Holmes (Sherlock's brother) and Basil the butler, and the scene is set for danger and deducing as they encourage Thomas to carry on the legacy of his father and Sherlock!

This was a fun book and will appeal to Sherlock fans! Fessenden has captured the style of Conan Doyle, yet adds his own touch with an original story, complete with wit and romance! I hope this is the first of a series!

5.0 von 5 Sternen If you like Sherlock Holmes, read this 11. März 2014
Von Bruce W Kunkle - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This is a very nicely done mystery in the tradition of Aurthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. It features Mycroft and the son of Dr. Watson.

But, aside from the fact that it has great characters (that you feel you know from the first page), it is a well-written and well-plotted story with good character development. The pacing moves along just right and the characters are likeable and interesting. I found it very enjoyable. Don't miss it!

5.0 von 5 Sternen And to think I almost didn't read it... 18. Januar 2014
Von Roger Bruner - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I downloaded this book because I met the author a few years ago and thought he would probably be a good writer. Then I started to read it.

What was I getting into, though? A mystery set in the early 1900s? And Dr. Watson's son and Sherlock Holmes's brother as two of the main characters? Those things didn't appeal to me. Honestly, I set the book aside for a few days.

Curiosity drew me back, though, and as I got to know, I fell in love with them and the book. Although I'm fonder of suspense than I am of mysteries, this book kept me turning pages. I was hooked.

I would consider this novel to be a strangely fun read for a mystery, and I found it refreshing that the hint of romance didn't start anywhere close to the beginning.

I hate to think what I would've missed had I not given this book a well-deserved chance.
