Excellent Source for Cancer Patients 9. November 2009
Von Kathryn Bunkovsky - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
I have been using the Keith Block Life Over Cancer book as a bible to help with complementary treatment for my dad who has been diagnosed with cancer. On a very common and uneducated level about this disease, I have done everything I can to learn about cancer and through all that I have read, I have learned that nutrition and diet is a major factor attributing to the spread of this disease. There are many cookbooks out there that claim they have cancer fighting recipes and they may very well contain recipes that will help prevent cancer, so I don't disregard them. But, this is the very first book that I have found that every recipe contained in it will help seriously combat the disease while you are dealing with it. IT IS TRULY A BOOK FOR CANCER PATIENTS, not just a book for those who are looking to prevent cancer. This book is full of information and contains recipes that truly make your body a hostile environment for cancer cells to survive. It is such a relief to finally find a book such as The Cancer Fighting Kitchen to help with authentic recipes that arm the patient or careperson with more knowledge and information to help combat this disease.

This is new proof that food is indeed love. 27. August 2009

"Cancer Fighting Kitchen" isn't just a cookbook; nor is another treatise on nutritional philosophy. It's indeed a cookbook, but so much more. Now that I've spent a couple of days with it, I know it's a nutritional arsenal with the kind of firepower that's perfect for what can seem like a tough assignment: cooking for someone going through cancer treatment. But whether you're cooking for someone who really needs to eat well in order to heal-- or you just want to understand how the food you eat influences your overall health and wellness, this is an amazing find. The recipes look and sound simple and delicious -- I can't wait to cook my way through all of them. This is the perfect follow-up to "One Bite at a Time" -- my first real friend in the kitchen when I needed a whole new way to look at cooking. I've cooked my way through it over the last three or four years, and I'm ready for the next step and this is it. Her Magic Mineral Broth is an amazing elixir that aids in whatever ails you -- I've made gallons of it, and now I'm thrilled to see two new takes on the basic recipe in this book.

This time Rebecca Katz offers us lots of easily digestible nutritional science along with recipes that look so tempting that I can almost taste and smell them just from the photos. But it is her disarming and sympathetic humor that leads you into each chapter and recipe with a little smile of recognition and a tidbit of personal insight. The Culinary Pharmacy section in her "Cancer fighting Toolkit" is worth the purchase price alone. It's a virtual encyclopedia of what we're all trying to learn about ingredients that add health-supportive magic to what we slave over in the kitchen. At a time when food TV is busily persuading us that cooking is something between a spectator sport and a reality show, this book points us back to what preparing food should be -- a loving spoonful of something special and sustaining. You don't need to be a patient or a caregiver to appreciate all that is in these pages, but if you are, this book is an amazing gift.

Not if you are the patient 12. März 2011

There is a lot of very valuable information in this book, no doubt. And the recipes look gorgeous and taste good too.

BUT, if you are the patient and you pick a recipe because it's supposed to be good for fatigue and it takes you a frantic hour on your feet to make it, it kind of misses the point. The few recipes I've tried have all been labor intensive, and require many ingredients which generally all have to be minced, diced, or crushed separately, involve a number of utensils, have to be blended in batches, and/or involve small amounts of many fresh herbs ($4 a variety at my supermarket) or unusual vegetables (3 Tbs of finely diced fennel).

If somebody else were cooking for me, I'd probably have a different opinion. But for me, I'll probably read it, and possiblyy adapt some of my own recipes in the light of her information. But I'm not going to make these particular recipes any more.

A Cookbook and So Much More! 12. Oktober 2009

This is book is so much more than just a cookbook. I purchased this for myself and for a friend who has a brother currently undergoing cancer treatment. When the book arrived in the mail, we sat down on the front steps of my house and flipped through the pages together. We were drawn in by how delicious the recipes sounded and looked throughout, and quickly found that beyond the recipes this book is a wonderful step-by-step guide to how one can put the kitchen to work in healing and the wellness of others. This book briefly discusses research that has been conducted with regard to food and cancer, the healing properties of ingredients found in these recipes, strategies for eating before and after treatment, and how caregivers can set up support teams for patients so that no individual feels overwhelmed by the care giving task. There is even a resource guide at the back of the book that provides a myriad of sources for people to turn to for cancer support and food information. We were blown away by the breadth of information contained inside. There are recipes to suit all taste buds and for someone who does not have cancer but likes to eat for good health, like me, this has also been a great resource. The recipes tried so far have been delicious.
Five stars to the author for handling a heavy topic with sensitivity and smarts. I wish this cookbook had been published years ago! A must read.

A very dear friend of mine gave me this fabulous cookbook during the Christmas holidays called `Cancer-Fighting Kitchen: Nourishing, Big-Flavour Recipes for Cancer Treatment and Recovery' by Rebecca Katz with Mat Edelson.

Since my diagnosis of Breast Cancer in October 2010, I have been given and purchased many cookbooks, reference guides to leading a healthier, active lifestyle, etc... I think I am covered for the next 9 months in terms of research and enjoyable reading! However, I thought it important to pass this along as it is one of those books that your family would benefit wholly from. What sets this cookbook apart from others is its unique approach to your kitchen and converting your refrigerator into its own cancer-fighting battle ground plus how to take care of yourself during Chemotherapy treatment.

From Chapter One's Cancer-Fighting Tool Kit and learning things about the four pantry staples, to easing side effects from treatment to easy recipes to relieving symptoms such as anemia, constipation, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. There is something about everything in terms of easing this tough period of a patients life.

And one of the perks of this Chapter, apart from the delicious recipes, is the Culinary Pharmacy section starting on page 28. It's your very own cheat-list to adding immunity boosting spices, seeds, and nuts to meals you may have only added mild seasoning to such as salt and pepper.

It also includes very important vegetables most recognized as natural anti-inflammatories, digestions aids, nausea reducers, anti-bacterials, appetite stimulators, and NF-kB regulators.

My personal favourite is learning the benefits of adding fresh and dry herbs to dishes and not just as last minute add-ins or garnishes. You learn not only their medicinal characteristics but additional ways to use them to extract their full potential as your very own food-warriors!

I love the spice Cumin, commonly used in Indian and Asian foods. Knowing now that it is an appetite stimulant, digestion aid, antimicrobial and NF-kB regulator prompts me to use more of it not only within my own dishes but to make sure it's properly introduced into my children's diets and NOW! "Studies looking into cumin seeds showed a potential ability to slow down the growth of stomach and cervical tumors" (page 34).

And take Sesame Seeds, just a sprinkle over your fruit, veggies, salads, whatever you decide, it becomes something other than just a garnish for flavour. They are considered an anti-inflammatory; they are rich in lignans which may protect against hormone-related cancers; they are rich in gamma-tocopherols, a form of vitamin E, which studies say may help men dealing with prostate cancer.

And let's talk about TOMATOES (powerful anti-oxidant lycopene), Butternut Squash (colon cleansing benefits), Spinach (carotenoids and kaempferol lowers risks in prostate and ovarian cancers) and Potatoes (Vitamin B6 and powerful detoxifier)! All major cancer-fighting vegetables that are common, easily found at the grocery store and easy to prepare - just start at page 52 and you are on your way to healthier soups that serve a purpose!

I love the fact that Chapter Three: Nourishing Soups and Broths starts off with the `Magic Mineral Broth', which Rebecca Katz refers to as her `Rosetta stone of soup' - providing a perfect base for any hearty soup but more importantly it serves as a rejuvenating liquid, to help Chemo patients with dehydration issues and will certainly boost any immune system down from minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and even sodium. It allows the body to recoup and start afresh.

And please know this cookbook is current! I am making an admission, an ignorant one at that, I had no idea there were so many fabulous alternatives to grains such as Quinoa and Spelt both anti-inflammatories! Recipes for Quinoa Pilaf is found on page 149 and Beyond Just Good Cornbread, uses Spelt Flour, is found on page 129 - good stuff!

I have to say I am believer now that food is our natural healer! Well, fresh unprocessed food heals us through out, and if prepared, cooked and consumed properly, we know food is the ultimate warrior in this battle against horrible diseases such as cancer.

I haven't promoted any cookbooks yet, but this will be my first and a great start to a whole new chapter in my own life. The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen is a must have for all kitchens and remember most of the recipes are child friendly as well.

Be well and God Bless!
