There's quite a bit of activity in Buddha of Suburbia. A bureaucrat becomes a suburban guru who marries a follower with a son who's a punk rocker named Charlie Hero. Consequently, the guru's son is propelled from his bland life into a series of erotic experiences in London. All the while, Hanif Kureishi keeps the tone lively with wry wit. On the description of suburban life: "We were proud of never learning anything except the names of footballers, the personnel of rock groups and the lyrics to 'I Am the Walrus.'" He also bends cultures, classes and genders while blasting the racism of British life in this 1990 Whitbread Prize winner.

Kureishi is the author of two controversial screenplays, My Beautiful Launderette (1985) and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987). This novel, written in a similar vein, deals with many of the same themes: father-son relations, punk rock, bisexuality, and class and racial prejudices in England. The story is told through the eyes of Karim Amir, "an Englishman born and bred, almost." Karim is a Holden Caulfield-like character who observes and analyzes the shortcomings of his society as he moves out of London's suburbs into the larger world. The book provides a witty, satiric view of English popular culture in the 1960s and 1970s, but it is fairly thin on plot and character development. This may be one instance where the movie version will actually be better than the book.

Hanif Kureishi does not only draw a vivid portrait of London and its suburbs of the late 1970s, but also features an adolescent protagonist (Karim Amir) who is searching for his (hybrid) identity and sexual orientation. Thus, besides initiation into the world of grown-ups, another important aspect of this novel is the everyday experience of first generation (Anwar, Jeeta, Changez) and second generation (Karim, Jamila) immigrants to Britain.
With his way of telling Kureishi has definitively prepared the ground for Zadie Smith's "White Teeth" which was published a decade later.
For sure not the best book I have ever read, but nevertheless a very entertaining, important and imformative work. So, FOUR STARS for Mr Kureishi!

I really liked the book! The book is about the initiation of Karim, a half-Indian and half-British teenager growing up in the suburbia of London. It demonstrates race conflicts and shows how a young man has to deal with his sexuality, his future and the break down of his family life. In my opinion the book is easy and funny to read. Some passages are a bit boring, others can be really touching. I think it's a book you can only identify with if you grow up under similar circumstances like the protagonist. Some links to Kureishi's film "My Beautiful Laundrette" can be observed.

The way in which Hanif Kureishi portrays Karim and his family in 1970's London was both exciting yet realistic. As I am studying the book for my English Higher I have found many themes in which I could, and have commented on; such as the way he (Karim) deals with racism, love, life and especially his family. I can safely say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel and I recommend it to anyone that enjoys real life drama.

Kureishi schreibt sehr unterhaltsam und mitreißend ... tolles Buch. Da möchte man gern in den 70ern leben.

funny disgusting book
I liked reading the book! It took me a long time but in the end the novel was funny and the plot was written with tension. After all, sometimes it was a little bit disgusting.
