Impressive Realism From LEGO Bricks 1. Juni 2013
Von Ashley Glennon - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
I was initially skeptical about if there was room for another LEGO firearms book, but after taking a look at this volume, I am impressed. The subtitle clearly states that you can build the world's most realistic LEGO handguns, yet author Jeff Boen still manages to over-deliver on realism.

In the opening notes, Boen describes how his LEGO models have evolved over many generations and the payoff for the reader is huge. Boen's models are nearly 1:1 scale and contain working triggers, hammers, slide locks and magazines. Although four of the models in the book don't actually shoot, Boen offers a stunning MAC-11 submachine gun that shoots rubber bands in semi-automatic fashion.

The book features full-color, step by step instructions that make liberal use of nearly every page. I particularly enjoyed the fact that many pages were laid out in "portrait" mode, offering a big picture, vertical view of the building steps that lie ahead. And preceding each chapter, Boen has created both a visual and written parts list for each firearm (including part numbers and part names), making it easy to order the parts online.

Boen recommends you start with his BG-22 model, then proceed to the 92FS, Desert Eagle, MAC-11, and then conclude with his `piece de resistance,' the Colt 1911. Even if builders stop at the BG-22, they will get a good overview of what this book is all about.

Whereas this book appears to be designed for adult LEGO fans, I believe it would be fully appreciated by law-enforcement or military personnel, professional armorers, gunsmiths and gun enthusiasts overall.

You can't fully appreciate the depth or detail of what LEGO realism means unless you get this book. Boen takes LEGO gun craft to a new level.

A Fabulous Book with Incredibly Clear Instructions 21. Juli 2013
Von Spencer - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Released in May of this year, The BrickGun Book by Jeff Boen takes a close and hands-on look at a genre of Lego modeling that is definitely not geared toward the typical young Lego audience. As the book warns, these models are not suitable for children under the age of twelve. That said, let us take a closer look at the book itself!

The author, Jeff Boen, begins with a short history of how he came to build model guns from Lego, which provides a nice background and lead-in to the instructions themselves (which comprise most of the book). Included in The BrickGun Book are instructions for building the BG22, 92FS, Desert Eagle, 1911, and Mac-11. A couple of these models have special additions. The BG22 has a removable magazine (complete with visible Lego bullet!), and the Mac-11 can launch rubber bands. That one of the models actually fired something impressed me, greatly. However, the other models are by no means just static creations. The BG22 has a movable slide, switchable safety catch, and working trigger. The 92FS, Desert Eagle, and 1911 include all of these features, plus a moving hammer that can be cocked. Not only does the Mac-11 fire rubber bands, the instructions seem to suggest that up to five rubber bands may be loaded at once.

After going through the book, the pictures of the 1911 model impressed me the most, complete with the look of the wooden laminate grip. The build itself took some time, but everything was very well explained. Next, I think it would be very cool to try one of these models in some other unique color - dark green, perhaps, or a bright red - just for fun.

One of my greatest difficulties with this book lies in the style of binding. The binding itself is excellent; however, it is most easy to use Lego instructions when they can lay flat and open with ease - something that the binding on this book was not aimed to do. Thus, I found, while building, that I had to prop the book open, placing weights on either side to spread the pages, which was a bit annoying, when it came time to turn the pages.

The instructions themselves are incredibly clear. In some instances, I felt myself wishing that the instructions in Lego's booklets were as easy to follow. Mostly, I could see this affecting a younger or newer group of Lego builders, whose experience, with the various pieces and how they fit together, was perhaps not as advanced. Of particular note is a section in the front of the book, describing how the instructions are laid out and how best to read them. Preceding each section of instructions, a parts list provides quantities, suggested colors, descriptions, and even the official Lego part number for each piece that will be needed in the model. This alone takes the instructions to a higher level of technicality than Lego's own manuals - a necessity when you are dealing with parts that do not come prepackaged together. For myself, it allowed me to fully prepare for building, being assured that I was not going to be scrambling to find an essential piece, after beginning.

Lego enthusiast? Handgun enthusiast? Realistic model enthusiast? Check out this book. It is definitely worth your time. If bigger guns are more your thing, be sure to check out LEGO Heavy Weapons, also available from No Starch Press.

Great models and clear building instructions 30. Mai 2013
Von Xander Soldaat - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
This is a book that is a must-have if you're either a LEGO fan, a gun aficionado or a combination of the two. The models in this book are simply stunning. There are building instructions (BIs) for 5 very detailed models with various moving parts. At the start of each model's chapter, there are two parts lists. One is in table format, with official part numbers, names, colours and quantities, so you can easily order missing parts from sites like Bricklink. However, if you already have a pretty extensive bricks collection, you can simply refer to the visual parts list, with nicely rendered images of all the parts and their respective required quantities. Despite the fact that the models are mostly black or brown, the BI images come out very crisp and that's not an easy feat! I am very glad they chose to make this book in colour.
I especially liked the history of how the author started his gun model building hobby and the stories behind the models.

If you want to build LEGO gun models, this book is for you! 12. Juli 2013

Book Review: The BrickGun Book: Build the World's Most Realistic LEGO(R) Handguns

The BrickGun Book by Jeff Boen is precisely what it claims to be: an instruction manual that will show you how to "Build the World's Most Realistic LEGO(R) Handguns". Published in 2013 by No Starch Press, The BrickGun Book contains 222 clearly illustrated pages that will show you how to put together five of the most popular models from Boen's company, BrickGun. The models included in the book are the BG22 with Magazine, 92FS, 1911, Desert Eagle and MAC-11 Rubber Band Shooter.

I am more of a fan of LEGO(R) than of guns, but I was interested to see how these models are made with functioning parts, and the MAC-11 Rubber Band Shooter can actually shoot up to 5 rubber bands semi-automatically. The book is well-designed, with very clear instructions to make it easy to replicate the five different models. The parts lists for each model come in two different formats, one written and one illustrated, so that you can more easily understand which pieces are needed for each model.

The book's introduction tells a bit about the models and the history of how the BrickGun Company came to be. It also explains some about how to interpret the instructions and how to acquire the parts you need. There are also hints about how to construct the models, and they are all very clearly illustrated with helpful photos.

The BrickGun Book has a very specific audience in mind. It is for people who want to build LEGO(R) replicas of five different real gun models (one of which shoots actual rubber bands). If that is what you are looking for, then this book would be a great choice for you.

(Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from No Starch in order to review it.)

The BrickGun Book 5. Juni 2013
Von Bruce Lowell - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
I'm really happy with this book. Visually it's fantastic, and that is definitely needed since its main function is as an instruction book. The layout and design are sharp and clean.
The book has instructions for five different handguns, and an introduction to familiarize the builder with Mr. Boen's style of building these guns. Each gun has the parts list presented as test and visually, and doesn't rush through the actual instructions.
A great book to have on any shelf, for the casual or committed fan of LEGO.
