Brendan Powell Smith has spent the last decade creating nearly 5,000 scenes from the bible with Legos. His wonderfully original sets are featured on his website, Bricktestament.com, but for the first time 1,500 photographs of these creative designs depicting the Old Testament from Earth 's creation to the Books of Kings are brought together in book format. The Holy Bible is complex; sometimes dark, and other times joyous, and Smith 's masterful work is a far cry from what a small child might build. The beauty of The Brick Bible is that everyone, from the devout to nonbelievers, will find something breathtaking, fascinating, or entertaining within this collection. Smith 's subtle touch brings out the nuances of each scene and makes you reconsider the way you look at Legos it 's something that needs to be seen to be believed.

Brendan Powell Smith, der sich selbst als Atheist bezeichnet, hat sich mit diesem Werk zum Ziel gesetzt, die Bibel so darzustellen, wie sie wirklich ist. Auch wenn er dieses Ziel nicht erreicht, ist sein Werk genial. Verstaubte Geschichten erwachen zu neuem Leben in sehr unkonventioneller und anregender Weise.

Selbstverständlich ist es nicht möglich, reinen Text in Bilder umzuwandeln, ohne subjektive Perspektiven mit ins Spiel zu bringen. Läßt man diesen (selbstgesteckten) irrealen Anspruch einmal außen vor, bleibt nur noch wenig Kritik übrig. Das wäre zum ersten die etwas einseitige Auswahl - der Autor scheint eine Vorliebe für die blutrünstigen Geschichten zu haben, die sich natürlich gut bildlich illustrieren lassen. Zum anderen weicht er in wenigen Details von der Originalhandlung ab, was aber weniger dem Werk an sich, als seinem selbstgesteckten Ziel, möglichst originalgetreu zu sein, schadet. Leider sind manche Fotos schlecht ausgeleuchtet, hier zeigt sich, daß der Künstler wirklich alles selber zu machen scheint. Es muß auch noch erwähnt werden, daß auf der Website des Autors auch Bücher aus dem Alten Testament veröffentlicht sind, die in dieser gedruckten Ausgabe leider nicht enthalten sind. Auch sind manche der enthaltenen Bücher stark gekürzt. Man dürfte also nicht einfach vom Alten Testament sprechen, sondern nur von Auszügen daraus.

Die Kreativität, mit der Brendan Powell Smith die Legosteine einsetzt, ist einfach beeindruckend. Er überrascht immer wieder mit neuen Ideen, wie er Menschen, Tiere, Pflanzen, Gebäude usw. darstellt. Vor allem im kleinen Maßstab, wo die Auswahl der Legosteine begrenzt ist, verblüfft er mit einfachen aber kreativen Umsetzungen. Auffallend ist auch seine Liebe zum Detail und der Aufwand, mit dem er für ein paar Fotos riesige Gebäude und Landschaften baut. Wer selbst Freude daran hat, mit Lego mehr als vorgefertigte Anleitungen umzusetzen, findet hier jede Menge unkonventionelle und kreative Anregungen.
Aber nicht nur künstlerisch, auch inhaltlich ist diese "Bibel" eine Bereicherung. Natürlich kann sie kein Ersatz für eine richtige Bibel sein, aber durch den Comic-Stil eröffnet sie einen neuen einfachen Zugang zu teilweise komplizierten und langen Geschichten. Zusammenhänge werden leichter verständlich, und die Bilder erleichtern die Vorstellung alter Erzählungen. Selbst ein Stammbaum wird so zur abwechslungsreichen Lektüre!
Daß der Text dabei der englischen King James-Übersetzung entnommen ist, schadet der Ausgabe nicht im geringsten. Die Bilder sind so anregend, daß es richtig Spaß macht, nebenbei noch etwas (altes) Englisch zu lernen!
Auch das Buch an sich ist für 271 vollfarbige A4-Seiten seinen Preis allemal Wert. Die Altersangabe der Zielgruppe (8-12 Jahre) sehe ich nach oben hin offen - für kleinere Kinder ist da Buch allerdings wirklich nicht zu empfehlen.

A very literal interpretation of the scriptures

I purchased this book a few weeks ago. I love finding things that get my kids interested in God's Word. Plus, we really love Legos, and this seemed the perfect fit. However, I believe the man who wrote the book and put the Legos together thought it would be a good idea to depict some of the most gruesome/gory, misunderstood/confusing/strange old testament Bible stories in an attempt to malign scripture or something of that nature. If that was his mission, then I believe he failed. There is a lot in the old testament that doesn't make sense and there is no way to figure it out. So what? The lego scenes of everything, including those weird scriptures, are still amazing and can be used as discussion points. There is a certain shock value, so be prepared. He takes everything written and depicts it as he read it.
For instance, my 9 year old has been pestering me about circumcision ever since seeing it depicted repeatedly in this book! It is so funny! He shows the men/boy legos with a red-colored block in front of their groin and a surprised or pained expression on their face. There are LOTS of those scenes. There are also lots of battle scenes complete with blood and decapitation and/or dismemberment. But that's what happens in battle. People die in horrible ways. It's not gentle. And there are lots of battle scenes in the Holy Bible.
He doesn't try to gloss over any gory details and he uses a lot of creative license for certain things. For example, the story of Job. Since the Holy Bible doesn't say specifically that Job was healed, he shows Job in every scene after his fortunes and family are restored as a crusty, disease-riddled man. Is that what happened? Who knows? Does it matter? Then the book shows the creation scenes in Genesis and shows God making many human beings because that's what the Holy Bible says in Genesis 1:26. He does show later Adam being created first in a further detailing of the creation in Genesis 2. So, a literal interpretation is what he decided to put in the book. Is it true? Well, the point is, and the author still showed this, is that all people are special and created by God. We weren't a mistake or just a happenstance. He also shows dinosaurs on the ark. Is that what really happened? Probably not, but who cares?!?
This lego book is NOT the bible. It depicts certain stories and leaves others out. Use this book as a tool for teaching and discussion, not as a basis for doctrine. He does intentionally leave out supporting scripture that would enhance one's understanding of the situation. That's not good, but it's not the end of the world. Get into the Word. You won't know if you don't read for yourself. Get your kids asking questions. That's how we learn more about the character of God, about His love, grace, and mercy. By ignoring the things we don't like or understand, we miss out on a lot of stuff. The Holy Bible repeatedly tells us not to get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments. Don't quibble over the small stuff. You can spend your whole life trying to "figure it all out," then completely miss the point of the God's Word.
This is a seriously cool book if you like legos. The complexity of his work is quite amazing. It is well worth the price. I really do hope he comes out with more stuff.
I do recommend that your kids stay away from the website. It is MUCH more graphic in terms of language and sexuality and is not for young kids.

Great for perusing what the bible is.

What is brilliant about this book:
1. If you find the bible boring and long-winded (I sure do after trying to read it a few times), this is a quick and easily digestible version.
2. If you wish to show your kids bible stories, and how they sometimes do, and mostly don't, teach good morals, this does that well.
3. Legos!
What is horrible about this book:
1. Religious nut-jobs will mark its overall ratings low, which may prevent people from otherwise purchasing this genius.
2. That's it.
I will be using this as one of the greatest authorities in teaching my 3 year old daughter about the bible.

The Brick Bible is essentially an illustrated Bible where all the many images are created soley with Legos. The humorlessly religious will cry that the author is a heretic unbeliever and seeks to belittle Christianity with Lego illustrations of the Bible's racier scenes; from bloody battlefields, to mass executions to blocky sex scenes, all in Lego. I think the criticism cries hollow here because it only illustrates what is actually IN the Bible and all passages are accurately given word for word. Whatever stone is thrown at the Brick Bible, no one can say "It lies".
