    Kurzbeschreibung

The Book of Souls is James Oswald's second electrifying thriller in the Detective Inspector McLean series.

Every year for ten years, a young woman's body was found in Edinburgh at Christmas time: naked, throat slit, body washed clean.

    Ten years, ten women.

The final victim, Kirsty Summers, was Detective Constable Tony McLean's fiancée. But the Christmas Killer made a mistake. In a cellar under a shop, McLean found a torture chamber and put an end to the brutal killing spree.

Twelve years later, and a fellow prisoner has just murdered the incarcerated Christmas Killer. But with the arrival of the festive season comes a body. A young woman: naked, washed, her throat cut.

    Is this a copycat killer?

Was the wrong man behind bars all this time?

Or is there a more sinister, frightening explanation?

McLean must revisit the most disturbing case of his life and discover what he missed before the killer strikes again . . .

The Book of Souls is the second in the Detective Inspector Mclean series. The first was Natural Causes and the upcoming third will be called The Hangman's Song. Fans of Ian Rankin, Peter James and Stuart McBride will love James Oswald's work.

Boring and unbelievable. The characters...like Dagwood and Needy, are so off reality that I lost interest early on. Too many worthless details that add nothing to the story line. I was greatly disappointed.

So who was it that committed the last murders? Bit of a strange ending detached from main story, I think.

    4.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting twist. 7. August 2012
Von Oregon Dreamer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Having just finished Book of Souls, I find that I must now go read the first book Natural Causes. I should have done more research before starting so I would have read them in order, but so enjoyed the book that I want more.
Inspector McLean seems the type of police officer that listens to his "feelings" and is not afraid to follow them even at the risk of riling his superiors. If I were ever a victim of crime, that is exactly the type of officer I would want working on my case.
The authors use of a bit of paranormal with regards to the book of souls was an interesting twist that only added to the plot.
I plan on keeping a look out for the next in the series or anything else by this author.

This is the second Inspector MClean mystery. This one is every bit as good as the first. You simply have to take some time and devote it to this adventure. Thanks to you James Olwald for letting us into this world of Scottish delight. As a former homicide detective I can truely say this book is dead on..no pun intended. Really buy this read it and enjoy the ride. And by the way James .....damm you for the cliff hanger...just kidding. Can't wait to read The Hangman's Song..so leave those cows alone and get to writting.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An excellent sequel to Natural Causes 6. August 2012

I read Natural Causes as a free Kindle book, and I subsequently bought The Book of Souls. Inspector McLean is a fascinating hero, and he grows as a police inspector and as a human being in this second book. Why, though, does he stay in the same department as the abusive Dagwood and the ineffectual Jayne? I am looking forward to The Hangman's Song.

An earlier reviewer points out that James Oswald could benefit from a good editor, and that's the truth. Both the writing and the plot need to be tightened. There are two episodes, one at the beginning and one near the end, which have no apparent connection to the story. Perhaps near the end, Oswald is setting us up for a sequel, Hollywood-style. But it doesn't serve the present story. That story concerns Tony McLean, an Edinburgh homicide detective. Ten years ago, his fiancee was murdered by Donald Anderson, the so-called Christmas Killer. Since then, the holidays have been difficult enough. But now someone is again killing in the manner of the now-dead Anderson. It nearly drives Tony over the edge, and it's about all his supervisors can do to cope with him. Add to this the burning of his apartment building, and the losses keep building. The possibility of a better future is nearby, but Tony cannot quite reach it. Indeed, the past keeps reaching out to him: a vision of his dead fiancee as Tony himself seems near death; an old monk who died thirty-four years before he begins visiting Tony with information about Anderson; a book that apparently reads people, rather than the other way around. Oswald's problem is that he lets the angst overwhelm the story and the paranormal stuff seems irrelevant to that story. His worst failure, though, is that he lets the story meander on, attempting to wrap it all up in a conclusion that only seems ludicrous. And what's this stuff about the Guild of Strangers, two of whose long-dead members bear the names of Tony's colleagues? On the plus side, life in Scotland is vividly portrayed, from the dicey weather to the peculiarities of the people. There is a sense, though, that even for the police the past is more real than the present. Maybe that's Oswald's point. If so, so what? I think he needs to decide if he's James Ellroy or Stephen King.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Love this book! 18. September 2012

I have really liked this author, the story lines he creates and his characters. It's kind of sad that this author has not been able to get his books published by a brick and mortar publisher and has had to resort to "self-publishing" his books. Luckily, in today's world he can self-publish his books through outlets like Amazon and people like me can have access to a delightlful series of books. This is the second in a series about a police detective in modern day Scotland. The first half of this book rambles a bit more than the first book did, but the pace and focus picked up nicely in the 2nd half of the story. The story line is similar to the first book in that it has a paranormal link to a series of murders though it is different in all other aspects from the first book. I am anxiously looking forward to the next Detective Mclean mystery novel and can only hope that James Oswald finishes it soon!
