This is actually the English translated edition of the similar titled Japanese art book (ISBN 4063647234) published back in 2008.
This hardcover edition published by Dark Horse features an additional 32 pages of artwork. That's over 150 pieces of samurai art.
If you like the pencil and ink covers by Hiroaki Samura, then this book is for you. It contains primarily the covers (up to manga volume 17), other coloured illustrations, the chapter break splash pages and some inked panels. Everything's about twice the size of the manga illustrations. This is a pretty big book.
The reproduction is pretty good, especially for colour illustrations where you can see the texture of the canvas showing beneath the paint. About half the book is in pencils. Unfortunately, there aren't any rough sketches or comic layouts.
If you're a reader or collector of Blade of the Immortal comics, then you already know what to expect.
Nice book for the fans.

Das Buch enthält 150 Seiten Illustrationen von Blade of the immortal.
Dabei handelt es sich zum Teil um sämtliche Cover der Mangas, sowie seitenfüllende Bilder verschiedener Kapitelanfänge des Mangas. Illustrationen belegen jeweils eine ganze Seite ohne störenden Text. Pure Art.
Ein paar blutige Themen sind dabei, wie auch zarte Nacktheit.
Ich würde sagen das Verhältnis von Bleistift- und Farbzeichnungen ist 50/50. Wobei mir die sw Illustrationen besser gefallen, da es ihm dort mehr gelingt, Leben und Charakter in die Bilder zu bringen. Bei manchen Bildern kann man z.B. geradezu fühlen, wie zart und verletzlich eine Haut ist. Das riesige Format trägt dazu bei, den Bildern "näher" zu kommen und den Stil Samuras zu bestaunen.
Das Buch selbst ist von Top Qualität, starker HC Einband, riesiges A4 Format und Glanzpapier. Auf jeden Fall etwas fürs Regal zum Anschauen!
Ich gebe nur 4 Sterne, weil keine wirklich neuen oder unbekannten Illustrationen dabei sind.
Blade Fans müssen zugreifen, Preis ist voll gerechtfertigt.

As a huge fan of Blade of the Immortal, this was a wonderful treat. Hiroaki Samura collects artwork spanning from the creation of his comic until a few years ago, including the covers of the volumes and bonus illustrations that appeared elsewhere. As a bonus, the book is only thirty dollars, which was highly surprising, as it is filled with full-color illustrations and bound beautifully in hardback. Viewing the work huge and crisp is wonderful, as it is usually reproduced much smaller. We can enjoy Samura's illustrations up close and personal, as they are meant to be seen.
The only drawbacks I can say is that if you are a big fan of his work, you've probably seen all of the pictures already, since many of them are covers to the trades. However, there is art I haven't seen before included in the book, and they even included the translated interview with the artist, which was great. Hopefully, Samura will release a book when the series concludes with the rest of the works, as he mentioned.
Getting this in the mail was like opening a present at Christmas! If you're a fan of Blade of the Immortal, the book is a must-have. And if you're not, you can still appreciate the mastery that is Samura's art.

If you've been collecting the Blade of the Immortal manga you've already seen most of the art in this book, but you haven't seen it like this. This book collects most of the frontpieces and covers from the series as well as some of the splash pages from the regular story. Compared to the manga, the larger format and higher quality printing allow for a much better look at the amazing pencil and ink work. For would-be artists and fans it offers a chance to really study Samura's draftsmanship and appreciate his great design and compositions.
