5.0 von 5 Sternen perfect for new and semi-new cyclists! 9. Juni 2014
Von invisible lasso - Veröffentlicht auf
The Bicycling Big Book of Cycling for Beginners was given to me as a very thoughtful present. I have been using a bike share in NYC to commute to work, run errands and have fun cruising around town. I love cycling! My enthusiasm was only hampered by my lack of knowledge about proper form, fit and strategy.

The Bicycling Big Book is truly a gift! It is so easy to read and helpful illustrations and photographs really aided me in putting the advice to practice. I’ve already adjusted my riding style and improved my experience by following the guidelines in the book.

I realized that some of the cycling “facts” I knew, were not quite accurate as well!

Some books of this nature “talk down” to the beginner, but the author is very encouraging and upbeat.

As the weather gets warmer and my rides get more challenging, I’m really looking forward to using some of the delicious sounding recipes to give me a boost during my rides!

I will definitely refer to this book again and again as I hit new levels of cycling proficiency!

5.0 von 5 Sternen √ TONS OF USEFUL TIPS! 26. Juni 2014

Format:Kindle Edition
This book is a well-designed, extensive introduction to cycling, aimed mostly at beginners, but also with good ideas even for experienced cyclists. The author is an expert in cycling and bike maintenance, and runs a well-known bike shop in Portland, Oregon.

If you are new to cycling, and want to see the "big picture" of biking, this is the book for you! The focus is very broad, starting with selecting your bike, all the way to what type of biking clothes to wear. There is a LOT in here, so take take your time reading, and enjoy!

♦ Tips on "Avoiding the Bonk," For a long time, I had not heard of this result of sudden lack of energy, usually due to improper fluids/nutrition. I bet a lot of beginners are not aware of this either. (Side note--the term apparently was first used in a cycling film in the 1950's.) There is an extensive discussion of this, near the end of the book. (I guess so that the newbies won't be scared off right away!)
♦ Useful chart using "Frequently Replaced" parts.
♦ Good discussion on how the pedal design has changed over the years from platform to clips, to clipless.
♦ Excellent discussion of safety, especially helmets. "Rider's shouldn't saddle up without reaching for their helmet first."
♦ Excellent chart on what to hold in the Saddle Bag.
♦ Extensive discussion on cleaning/lubing your bike. Lots of good points.
♦ Lots of good advice on "Becoming a Flat Repair Pro." I learned some things here.

♦ I can't think of anything I didn't like.

♦ Great illustrations--for example the artwork showing, "Clipping in and out of clipless pedals." Really nice artwork!
♦ Really a well-designed book. Extensive Table of Contents makes navigation much easier.
♦ Excellent charts depicting key features--for example the "Frame Materials" chart shows the differences between the different metals used.

♦ Brief section on "Women-Specific Design." That was considerate and useful.
♦ Important chart showing when one should replace their helmet. A lot of riders probably don't realize that many riders do not wear their helmet properly! These discussions are most helpful to try to correct that issue.
♦ Surprising section on the fitness monitors for bikers.
♦ Interesting and useful advice for "If You're Going Down..." Hey wait! What do you mean "Going Down??"

√ Highly Recommend! In sum, an excellent, useful book. Hard to find anything to criticize about this gem. A lot of time and effort has obviously been spent on this excellent book. I found it very interesting and useful. I am still studying that "Parts that Break Frequently" chart. Oh no, I better go get that brake caliper, and then ...

The Bicycling Big Book of Cycling for Beginners really is what it says; a book for beginners who may know nothing or very little about a bike. I used to ride my bike as a kid, commuted (and abused) my bike in college, then had no time for it until my knees needed a knee friendly exercise like cycling. I spent countless hours googling topics, reading forums, reading magazines, and buying things I didn't need. I could have saved a ton of money if I would have just started with this book. It arms you with the information you need to be able to go out and ask intelligent questions at the bike shop or club ride and get off on the right foot. It also provides enough details on all subjects so you can choose where to go do more research on your own.

The one downside of the book is that Tori recommends purchasing your bike at a local bike shop new and doesn't cover the possibilities of purchasing a used bike. For some of us even a new "budget" bike is too much money to put into a new sport without knowing if we will like it or not. Bikes depreciate like a car, as soon as you leave the shop with it the resale value takes a hit. that means you can get a used bike for much less than the price of a new one if you are patient. I still highly recommend the book but in addition add in your own research about the possibilities of renting a bike, talking to the local shop about buying a trade in, or even purchasing one on craigslist or eBay.

So, buy the book (the ebook was very inexpensive) get your gear and get going!

Just finished the book and what a help it was. Knowledge is power; this book gave me what I needed before purchasing my first road bike. Would love to see some companion videos for the book i.e., fixing a flat, bicycle cleaning. Her text "how to's" are helpful but a picture is worth a thousand words.

I highly recommend this book!
