This book is a classic - it was only published in 2011 but it will undoubtedly be regarded as a ground-breaking history. At over 500 pages it is still a page turner. I couldn't put it down. It tells the story of a number of participants in that horrifying war - combatants and non-combatants. It covers a broad geographic spread and it's great to hear voices from the Italian and Austro-Hungarian front (amongst others including east Africa and the Middle-east ) which are all too often ignored. It is chronologically based, and written in the present tense, which really brings the characters to life - all based on solid research using their own words. We follow the life (and in some cases death) of twenty individuals from 1914 through to 1918. As the subtitle states: 'An intimate history of the First World War' - that it truly is. As one Australian used to say.... 'Do yourself a favour and get a copy!'
