Beatmaking is a rich and very meticulous art-craft. It contains a number of unique methods and practices, each potentially more complex and challenging than the other. The BeatTips Manual breaks down the complexity of beatmaking and hip hop/rap production, and erases all of the myth and mystery.

The BeatTips Manual is brilliantly divided into five primary parts, including: an absolutely stunning History part, an extensively detailed and robust Instruction part, a Music Theory part, a Business part, and an explosive Interviews part, which includes exclusive shop-talk with DJ Premier, DJ Toomp, 9th Wonder, Marley Marl and more. Indeed, The BeatTips Manual is meticulously comprehensive and sharply informative. Through a highly detailed analysis of the origins of beatmaking as well as its key aesthetics, principles, predilections, nuances, and priorities, Amir Said (Sa id) offers a magnificent level of "understanding." Moreover, he convincingly argues that not only is beatmaking a legitimate music compositional process, but that beatmakers (hip hop producers) are the common composers of our time.

An incredibly revealing look at the beatmaking musical process, and one of the most fascinating studies of hip hop culture and the hip hop/rap music tradition to ever be recorded, The BeatTips Manual is a groundbreaking work. Incomparable in both scope and size, this book deciphers many untold nuances of the art of beatmaking. Destined to serve as the standard text for hip hop production education, The BeatTips Manual is also certain to be one of the leading studies of hip hop culture. Extremely accessible and intensely thought-provoking, The BeatTips Manual is the answer for anyone interested in improving their beatmaking knowledge and understanding of hip hop/rap music and the encompassing hip hop culture.

The book gives a great overview about the history of hip-hop and about beatmaking. Every beatmaker should read it to understand the culture and traditions of beatmaking. There are a lot of technical information and advices about making drums and the use of samples and so on. It is also very useful because you get a certain vocabulary to talk about making beats. That makes it easier to talk with other beatmakers about certain topics. It is easy to read even for a foreign-language person.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Extremely thoughtful reflection on making beats 18. Januar 2014
Von Frank - Veröffentlicht auf
Said has done an excellent job with this book. It is extremely thoughtful, and Said's insights really opened my mind up to seeing beat making from a totally different perspective. There is a technical side to this book which goes into lots of detail on actual techniques for using drum machines, and that is great, but what really made this book fascinating was the insight into the history of beat making and the principles that arose from that history. It totally changed my way of approaching and thinking about my own beat making. The concept that the beat maker is a descendant of the DJ and has different aesthetic goals than the classically trained music composer was one of the real game changers.

Halfway through this book and already making beats better than I could have hoped for. Couldn't wait to review it. This is more than just a beat making tutorial book. This teaches you how to feel your own music and project the passion of the hip-hop mentality into your work. In other words, it prevents you from throwing a bunch of instruments together and encourages you to inject meaning and purpose into the rhythm itself, therefore creating a track that is alive rather than robotic and lifeless with no passion. Anyone can make beats, few can create hip-hop art. This book puts you on the path to artistry. What kind of producer do you want to be??

If there were a nuclear war and all that was left was a recording studio and a copy of this book, the survivors could make a pretty banging album in a few months. Said covers extensively and clearly, why things are the way they are (e.g., why producers use certain effects on their drums) and goes into the technical details of how to achieve these effects, details which are applicable to any particular and proper piece of equipment. The reader will learn the structure a hip hop song, the drum framework that makes up the architecture of most beats, and the methods and motives behind sampling, irrespective of how these techniques are achieved. The author puts hip hop in perspective through a studious examination of historical trends that is never dry or academic. But, make no mistake, this book will school you, and the reader will come out with an appreciation of form, technique, history, and a confidence to move forward as a beatmaker, since they will have an appreciation for the tradition they are working in. This book could help a future producer, or a professor planning a class. It was written with a real passion for the subject, and is far from either a disinterested manual or a dry history of a late 20th century art form. That's what makes it so winning, the author's conviction. He believes in his subject so much that the reader can't help but be caught up in his enthusiasm. For the price, this is a serious bargain, and the Kindle edition is very high quality. This book as a whole will definitely be recognized as a work of seminal importance in hip hop studies. The BeatTips manual is a master class. Take it.
5.0 von 5 Sternen A classic book on the origins of hip hop culture. An essential guide for anyone into beatmaking. 4. April 2014

As a lifelong hip hop fan and a 'bedroom beatmaker' and all-round music geek, I thought this book delivered on all fronts. I am a big fan of the author's website and so expected a lot from this book and it did not disappoint at all.

The book celebrates the inventiveness of a marginalized people who created an entire art form and culture with what little they had by way of equipment and resources; explores hip hop's golden era of beatmaking in the mid-nineties; provides valuable advice on studio set-up and technical know-how on making hip hop beats; shares business advice; and has an amazing end section filled with in depth, exclusive interviews with icons including Marley Marl, DJ Premier and 9th Wonder. Each of these sections are worth the price of the book alone.

If you have even a slight interest in quality hip hop and / or hip hop music production you need this book.

I loved this book the moment I read it. There is no book in the market that teaches you about all aspects of hip-hop including the history of hip-hop, how to make a beat, production equipment, and most importantly the business of hip-hop. The best part of the book for me though was the interviews Sa'id had with various hip-hop music producers, like 9th Wonder, DJ Premier and Marley Marl. The instructional part of the book was very helpful and detailed as well. Hip-hop is deeper than just beatmaking. Hip-hop is the most popular form of music in the world today and if your looking for a book that teaches you about beatmaking, composition and arranging your beats plus so much more this is the book for you.
