Synopsis
This work traces the emergence of the impressive vocal writing that resulted from the marriage of the bel canto and Romantic eras. It also covers the uniquely versatile divas who were given the opportunities to make their mark from the time of Cherubini to that of a young Verdi. Both the wide-ranging vocalism in the scores themselves and the artists capable of performing this style are referred to as assoluta. Chapters consider Luigi Cherubini's Medee, Gioacchino Rossini's Armida, Carl Maria von Weber's Oberon, Gaetano Donizetti's Anna Bolena, Vincenzo Bellini's Norma, Donizetti's Gemma di Vergy and Roberto Devereux, the period of transition in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and Giuseppe Verdi's Nabucco and Macbeth.

Great Book - Absolutely REVOLUTIONARY

This book is fantastic, lots of good information for those insterested in historical singers. If someone critics the research, I would suggest them to go back and do their own (so they will find they don't know what they are saying), very good and reliable stuff.
I consider it extremely revolutionary in the way it exposes the shortcomings of certain singers such as Edita Gruberova and Joan Sutherland who have attempted some Assoluta roles (as if trying to be Maria Callas) and have failed miserably having to transpose things up and down or completely change the music to fit their voices.

Lots of Errors

This is a good read, though Mr. Riggs appears not to have done his research terribly well, as the book is riddled with far too many factual and scholastic errors. He does make a good point here and there though.
