The book is a classic, which according to my definition means that I never tire of it. But, for better or worse, the book itself is overshadowed by the movie, which will always be remembered as the movie that introduced us to Marilyn. She had a small part, that of Emmerich's girl, but she lit up the screen. Considering that it was filmned in Black and White, that was quite a feat. That part led to Niagra and that led to immortality. There was also another film, with Richard Widmark and Elisha Cook, around then, in which she played the part of a girl who was insane and played it very well. Getting back to Asphalt Jungle, this, along with Burnett's other works, place him in the company of Hammett, Cain, and Chandler, which is pretty good company. The supporting cast was also worth the price of the ticket. If I remember correctly, Dix was played by Sterling Hayden and Doc might have been Sam Jaffe. It is funny how the memory starts to go, but I can surely remember that it was Marylin. Also, many thanks to those responsible for getting us these classics for .99.
