I was expecting something similar to the previous book, The Art of Pirates of the Caribbean. Unfortunately, it's not as good.
This is a 160-page hardcover book. The paper is great and they are really generous with the canvas size, opting to print everything big, photos and art, to the extent that it feels like more work could be included.
Character art is scarce. Since the previous art book collects artwork from the first three movies, you won't see those getting duplicated here. There are new zombies, mermaids and a few pirates (two actually with three illustrations total). Thankfully, the zombie pirates look awesome.
Much of the art are paintings of story scenes and the backgrounds. Some of them are printed really huge, covering two pages. A few don't have enough details to go over two pages - I'm comparing this to video games and 3D animated movies background art. The few background paintings that were scaled down to half page sizes look better.
There's not much prop art as well which is quite strange since that this is a prop-heavy movie.
If you love photographs, almost a quarter of the book is filled with them, some taken by Jerry Bruckheimer. Some photos take a whole page to themselves. They look good but I would have preferred more concept art instead.
The commentary comes in the form of script dialogues and descriptions, interesting insights on creating the designs. There are usually two to four paragraphs on a page with plenty of white space.
Nice art book overall, but it really feels like it could use more art - well, the previous art book was packed with art.

Das Buch "The Art of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" von Disney Editions kann mit vielen Bildern, aber wenig Inhalt nicht ganz überzeugen.
Unabhängig davon, ob einem der neue Film gefällt oder nicht, ist dieses Buch doch mehr eine Sammlung von Concept-Art, mit wenigen echten Setaufnahmen.
Im Vergleich zu anderen "Art of"-Büchern bekommt man auch wenig Text über Produktion, Enstehung, Filmtechnik und Schauspieler.
Die Einleitung von Jerry Bruckheimer ist auch sehr allgemein gehalten und beleuchtet nur sehr oberflächlich die Enstehung und Idee zu einer weiteren Forsetzung der Piraten-Reihe.
Mehrere "weiße Seiten" in diesem Buch werden von Zitaten aus dem Film gefüllt. Mann gewinnt ein bisschen den Eindruck, dass in diesem Buch Platz vergeudet wurde. Von einer solchen großen Produktion muss es doch mehr brauchbares Material geben, welches man für dieses Buch hätte verwenden können.
Der Großteil der eigentlichen Art-Zeichnungen besteht aus Konzepten zur Quelle der ewigen Jugend, Zombis und den Sets in London. Immerhin werden Schauplätze und Drehorte anhand der Bilder kurz vermerkt.
Echtes Piraten-Feeling kommt bei der Betrachtung dieses 160 seitigen Buches nur selten rüber, denn es gibt nur sehr wenige Aufnahmen von Johnny Depp, Kostüme, Waffen und selbst die Queen Anne's Revenge, das zentrale Schiff im Film, wird nur in einer Großaufnahme und 2 kleinen Aufnahmen näher beleuchtet.
Fazit: Wer ein Buch mit vielen Informationen, Fotos und Hintergründen über Piraten erwartet, der wird sicherlich enttäuscht sein. Für Johnny Depp Fans ist diese Buch auch nur begrenzt empfehlenswert.
Dennoch enthält dieses Buch die wichtigsten Szenen und Inhalte im neuen Fluch der Karibik Film, die Qualität der Fotos ist hochwertig, aber als Meisterwerk kann man dieses Buch nicht bezeichnen. Schade.

Feels skimpy...

I was really looking forward to this book, but I have to say that I am disappointed to some extent. There are 3 chapters essentially:
The Chase is On
On the High Seas
Aqua de Vida
There are quite a few film stills, there are some storyboards (not a lot), concept art (not enough)... In my opinion this is a very weak attempt and does not live up to the other Art of titles.
I can hardly even muster enough enthusiasm to even write this review.
I would pass this one up.

I made a mistake and chose to pre-order this on the assumption that it would build on the standard set by the previous Pirates books.
I was sorely let down when I received an item more akin to a movie photo companion than an actual art-of book. This is a trend with several such art books of late. Unlike the wonderful "Art of Star Wars" series , "The Lord of the Rings", or the always-terrific Pixar offerings, this collection lacks eye-catching renderings; what little art is on display is uninspired and easily passed over. It's a wonder that such low-caliber art, absent any narrative suggestion, would be very useful to a film production. The result, in effect, left me breezing through pages searching for something worthwhile to look at.
A handful of nice production photographs accompany each chapter.
Note: there is an obvious absence of production design renderings, which, given the nature of the films, is surprising. I remember when charcoal character and set renderings for "The Curse of the Black Pearl" were on display at the Disneyland gallery; they were so creative and suggested the arc of the storyline; in short, they were inspiring! But there is nothing like that here.
