Kurzbeschreibung

After fire destroyed Missouri’s capitol in 1911, voters approved a bond issue to construct a new statehouse. The tax to pay the bonds produced a one-million-dollar surplus, leaving a vast amount of money to decorate the new building. A special commission of art-minded Missourians employed some of the nation’s leading painters and sculptors to create powerful and often huge pieces of art to adorn Missouri’s most important new structure.

The art of the Missouri capitol was considered among the finest to adorn any state capitol. But the passage of time has lessened recognition of the pieces and their creators. Most people—even those daily wandering the marble halls—have little knowledge of the significance of the art and the history it portrays.

Bob Priddy and Jeffrey Ball return the capitol’s decorations to prominence in The Art of the Missouri Capitol: History in Canvas, Bronze, and Stone. The book tells the many stories behind the art: the rigors of its creation, the political roadblocks that endangered the decoration program, and the triumph of the commissioners who devoted more than ten years to the project.

The Art of the Missouri Capitol presents the art in 270 images, many by Lloyd Grotjan, mostly of the building’s many compelling paintings, murals, and sculptures. Priddy, a journalist who has covered the Missouri legislature for more than three decades, and Ball, an art historian, use a wealth of historical materials to connect the grand design of the capitol decorations with accounts of sometimes temperamental artists and meddling politicians. The authors provide historical and artistic context to explain the many surprising, controversial choices the artists made, and they use Missouri history to explain the tales depicted in the artwork, revealing the events—and inaccuracies—that the paintings bring to life.

The authors honor the Missouri capitol’s artistic excellence in a way that will appeal to art enthusiasts and history buffs as well as to general readers. The Art of the Missouri Capitol: History in Canvas, Bronze, and Stone is the definitive account of the art’s creation, of the men who produced it, and of the Missourians who lived the history that inspired it.

Excellent book ! 13. Juli 2011

I pre-ordered this book in December 2010... and it turned out to be well worth the wait! This is probably the best book ever produced on a capitol building! Full of beautiful pictures of all the paintings, statues, architectural details,... to be found in the Missouri State Capitol!

According to my own preferences, the Missouri State Capitol is one of the most beautiful state capitols around, along with those of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Louisiana and Oregon. Hope this book will inspire other states to produce such a well crafted book on their own capitol buildings!

The Missouri State Capitol is among the most beautiful and majestic of all State Capitol buildings and certainly one of, if not the, most decorated. Its list of paintings includes major works by well-known names such as N.C.Wyeth and Thomas Hart Benton and the sculpture and architecture are outstanding. "The Art Of The Missouri Capitol" captures the grandeur and stateliness of the structure and its artwork through dozens of brilliantly conceived and flawlessly executed photos by well-known Missouri photographer Lloyd Grotjan and others while providing an extremely detailed and well-researched written history in enjoyable and easily-readable prose. Obviously a labor of love by Bob Priddy and Jeffrey Ball, their care in preserving and communicating the story of the Capitol is remarkable and effective. And, almost unheard of in a "coffee table" book, an entertaining read. All capitols are frequent sites for political skirmishes and sometimes open political warfare, but who would have suspected that those now-quiet Missouri halls were once the setting for a major 1920s artistic battle as well? Without Bob Priddy, Jeffrey Ball and "The Art of the Missouri Capitol", the fireworks of the artist/politician engagement over the Capitol artwork would have been lost forever. And Lloyd Grotjan's stunning photographic work enables the reader to see exactly what all the fuss was about. Having wandered its halls from the time I could walk, still I learned a tremendous amount about the building, its history, its architecture and its art, and fully recommend "The Art of the Missouri Capitol" to all old Capitol buffs such as myself as well as more casual visitors and even those who have never set foot in Missouri or its capitol.
