Knitting wizard Chin, author of Urban Knitter (2002) and Mosaic Magic (1999), concentrates her third how-to book on the myriad ways to incorporate beads into knit and crochet projects--more than 25, ranging from a bespangled Grace Kelly-style collar to a wondrous Homage to [Keith] Haring jacket in purple chenille. In essence, she separates the book into techniques, differentiated between three interpretations of beads entangled in yarn: those integrated into the fabric, individual strands with beads woven in, and beads applied onto the finished fabric. Each pattern features at least one color photograph, charts or illustrations, and directions that even a beginner could follow. A bit advanced for the rank novice, yet enticing designs for anyone to try. Glossary, suppliers, and further reading appended.
Doelp takes the art of beading quite literally, using as her inspirational springboard the extraordinary, intricate immortelles, or French Victorian beaded mourning wreaths. Giving kudos to her mentor Virginia Nathanson, she briefly covers the history, then expounds on the basics and four techniques (continuous loops, continuous crossover loops, basic frame, and continuous wraparound loops), with accompanying directions. Project number 1, the classic poppy pin, features excellent step-by-step photographs that capture the beading process. From that, readers are encouraged to try the other 29, whether it's a lifelike draping wisteria or a 150 percent fantasy bouquet. New techniques are flagged and explained well, such as outlining and striping; occasional design tips enhance the do-it-yourselfer's pride of accomplishment. Das Buch enthält eigentlich alle grundlegenden Techniken für das Anfertigen von Perlblumen und Dekoration.
Die Anleitungen sind ausführlich, allerdings sind Englischkenntnisse Voraussetzung.
Die Größenangaben sind alle in Inch, dieses Problem kann man aber mit einem normalen Schneider-Maßband beheben, das ja normalerweise Zentimeter und Inch-Einheiten anzeigt.
Für alle Projekte gibt es auch gut verständliche farbige Schema-Zeichnungen, die gerade Anfängern sehr helfen.
Die Blumen selbst sind hübsch, vielfältig und für diverse Gelegenheiten verwendbar. Allerdings sind sie von der Optik her nicht ganz so gut und komplex wie in anderen Büchern (z.B. French Beaded Designs" oder "Beads in Bloom"- die aber zugegebenermaßen eher Fortgeschrittene ansprechen)
Die enthaltenen Deko-Projekte sind eher Standard- aber auch sie sind für Anfänger sehr gut geeignet und ansprechend.

Great for beginnners!

This was the 4rd book on french beaded flowers that I picked up and I found it to be the best so far. The instructions are very detailed with photos of each step along the way. More detailed than other books I have tried to learn from. If you prefer photos showing the steps as opposed to just hand-drawn diagrams, then this is the book for you!
The pictures of finished projects are gorgeous! Wonderfully inspiring, especially the "fantasy flowers" near the back of the book.
The only minor quibble I have regards the order of introducing new techniques. Some of the advanced techniques are introduced in later chapters, yet are referenced in earlier flowers. The instructions with say "see page such-and-such for this technique", and you have to flip several pages later in the book to find out how to finish your flower. I think it would have been better to have each new technique introduced in order. But that is just a minor complaint based on my personal preferences.
Overall, a stunning book, well worth the money!

Carols' use of step by step photos and close-up views, makes this a particularly special book. Even a beginner will find the detailed step by step instructions easy to follow. It should also be noted that Carol has selflessly included designs from her favorite, fellow bead artists. This book is a "must have" for the serious bead flower enthusiast.

Very nice beading book

This was the first French beading book that I bought. As a beginner, it was a little hard to figure everything out at first, but with some practice and the detailed pictures in this book, I was able to come up with a nice finished product. The things I liked about this book, specifically, were how the first project illustrated the four basic techniques that would be used throughout the whole book. Once I fished the poppy, I almost couldn't believe it would be that simple! I also liked how each project was unique by demonstrating a new concept or some variation of the original four basic techniques (for example, striping the tiger lily and split loop for the dogwood).
What I didn't like too much about this book was that some of the flowers occasionally use previous techniques or ones that are covered later, and so a bit of page turning had to be done.
All in all, the concepts are explained really well, the designs are lovely and the book itself is quite pretty if you just want to admire the pictures, so I highly recommend this book.
