a very useful book

Date selection as I remember used to be done at temples by the monks. Until I read this book, I didn't know think that it was this simple to select a good date - and rewarding too. For starters, it gives me the confidence that I'm doing the right thing at the right time - or at least not at the WORST time in situations where I couldn't select the best dates. I would encourage anyone without this skill to read this book and acquire this useful skill - it is almost effortless to do so. Easy to read and to-the-point examples illustrate how it's all done.

Is the tong shu accurate?

I will admit that this is a well written book and full of good information. But after looking on some of the days that were to be avoided in 2011 (big disaster days), it looked like the stock market was up both those days in a big way. I've also read online where people have gotten mixed results from the tong shu method of date selection.
In addition, the tong shu method seems to sometimes contradict the chinese daily almanac method leading to further confusion (the almanac method is a different method to the tong shu). And of course the tong shu can contradict itself on certain days.
I'm not saying there isn't some validity to this method, but I've had more success with astrology, chinese astrology, and even numerology than this method.
The method of calculation is also time consuming and requires you either have microsoft outlook or some external source for looking up chinese calendar dates to determine what day/year it is (especially day, which is hard to figure out).
Perhaps this is one reason why this method hasn't caught up in mainstream culture - unlike chinese purple astrology which was heavily guarded secret. If you can get computer software for this - cheaply, then maybe this might be useful.
I've have had success with other chinese methods - like flying star feng shui. But even these seem to be subject to astrology/chinese astrology - which appear to be more powerful. Perhaps these methods should be qualified under such context.

Useful book for the average person

I think this book is very interesting for the average person, who don't want to learn a lot of BaZi, but offers enough information about electional chinese astrology for your day-to-day matters.
As always, Joey Yap promises "advanced techniques" for his next book. In his book about BaZi, this can be very annoying, as you feel that he is not really teaching the essential you need to know. But this is not so important in this book, as the art of date selection is very hierarchical in nature: first you throw out the bad, and then select the good among the usable. So, the information in the book will be more than enough for most practical matters.
As always, Joey Yap promises "advanced techniques" for his next book. In his book about BaZi, this can be very annoying, as you feel that he is not really teaching the essential you need to know.
