Produktbeschreibungen

Amazon.com

This attractively packaged collection, edited by preeminent H. P. Lovecraft scholar S. T. Joshi, is a treat for long-time enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Joshi provides newly corrected text and footnotes for three superb stories--"The Rats in the Walls," "The Colour out of Space," and "The Dunwich Horror"--as well as the novella "At the Mountains of Madness,"acknowledged as Lovecraft's masterpiece. He explains the origins of place and character names, tracks influences from Lovecraft's reading, defines unusual words such as "nefandous" and "cyclopean," and clarifies which of the cited occult texts are fictional and which are real. The Annotated H. P. Lovecraft also includes a biographical introduction, comments from contemporary horror writers, excerpts from letters presenting Lovecraft's own theories about weird fiction, a critical summary of Lovecraft movies, a select bibliography, and numerous black-and-white photographs. Don't make the mistake of thinking that The Annotated H. P. Lovecraft is just another Lovecraft collection: Joshi has distilled decades of learning into well-chosen observations that are a delight to read.

From Booklist

Every Lovecraftian revels in the made-up scholarly apparatus with which Lovecraft's stories abound, and the application of scholarship to his writing, in turn, should entice them to this book. The contents are five of Lovecraft's most familiar stories: "Herbert West--Reanimator" (source of Stuart Gordon's splatter movie classic Reanimator), "The Rats in the Walls," "The Colour Out of Space," "The Dunwich Horror," and "At the Mountains of Madness"--some of the most science-fictional pieces in the Lovecraft corpus. Editor Joshi, who has made Lovecraft his specialty (this is the twentieth Lovecraft volume he has edited or written), provides notes that define terms, explain place references, discuss textual problems and variants, and point out characteristic themes. A good time will be had by all, even newcomers to Lovecraft, for the five tales show the twentieth-century Poe at his best. Ray Olson

Overediting 25. August 2007
Format:Taschenbuch
Only three out of five points because the editor Joshi deliberately overedited Lovecraft's work with - to me - pointless annotations that might contribute to the reading of a die-hard fan who is very much interested in the connection of Lovecraft's fictional texts. Joshi put extensive annotations in footnotes that should have been endnotes, because they at times take up mor than three-fourths of the pages. I have never seen an annotated edition that was thus overloaded with information that does not contribute to the understanding of the text itself. For a first-time read I would suggest a plain edition.

The master of horror! 23. Juni 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
A scholarly tome on a master of the horror genre! Yes! The selection of classic works by the master of horror, H. P. Lovecraft, alone is worth the book. The added bonus of thorough annotated entries makes this a fascinating read for any hardcore HPL fan-and a great introduction for those just discovering this unique old world writer.

The term "must have" is often overused, but here it can be honestly applied. Remember in At the Mountains of Madness where the narrator repeatedly refers to the frozen landscapes looking like some obscure painter's works? Here you can finally find out who that painter was, and see some of his works! For that alone this book is great, but the rest of the annotations are excellent. Luckily, there is a sequel.

A very finely edited edition, but overstuffed.
S.T. Joshi, the foremost expert in the field of Lovecraft and his works, has done a masterful job of editing this oddly put together edition. Lesen Sie weiter...

Good for an intro, but not for a current hardcore fan.

WARNING-Read these tales elsewhere first!
Joshi's annotations ruined "At the Mountains of Madness" for me. He tells certain things regarding the direction of the story blatently. I assume H.P.L. Lesen Sie weiter...

An excellent introduction to Lovecraft's work

May I have more, please....?
S.T. Joshi, who has made a lifetime out of bringing H.P. Lovecraft out of the shadow of August Derleth, his "reputed" savior, has scored with another good effort. Lesen Sie weiter...

Lovecraft may have died penniless, but this is not reflected in his work, which at it's best is creative genius. Lesen Sie weiter...

Nice for fans to have
I don't give this book an average rating based upon the actual stories, which are fine examples of Lovecraft's best, but for Joshi's paltry annotations. Lesen Sie weiter...
