This upgrade of The American Accent Guide, 2nd Edition (AAG). provides enhanced features, including the audio (7: 43 hours) now in MP3 format, contained in 1 CD. The audio tracts are in shorter segments, and the book provides helpful references to corresponding tracts. The book includes an index. This accent reduction program uses an innovative approach in its comprehensive training of each component of English speech. It gives thorough focus to the vocal/timing patterns of intonation, stress, and rhythm and to articulation of each of the individual speech sounds in all their natural contexts, and their variations. It uses the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Produced by a speech-language pathologist with an advanced degree in the area of language, speech, and linguistics. The accompanying audio features various male and female voices modeling everyday language of casual/social to professional/business/technical situations. Engaging, interactive exercises, rich graphics, detail

A trustworthy course 21. Juli 2008
Von D. Yang - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
This book is probably the best one of this kind.
First, it covers a large amount of detailed information such as a variety of consonant "blends". Personally, I think this kind of meticulous treatment is very helpful.
Second, two key areas in American accent, rhythm and intonation, are handled in a comprehensive, yet easy-to-follow way way. The topic of rhythm used to be a blurry and fuzzy area to me. However, the coverage of this topic in section 4 is almost foolproof.
Finally, it just contains the right number of exercises. You can follow the exercises two or three times and not feel exhausted. One possible improvment the book can make in the next version is to include the supplementary exercises in the audio part.
I would like to recommend this book to anyone who can speak English well, but are not confident with their pronunciation.

Best Accent Guide for American English 8. Juni 2008
Von Mara Keizer - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
The reviews for the American Accent Guide with 8 CDs were very helpful.
Then I found out about this upgrade version with MP3, and I am very
glad, because I bought it instead. I recommend that if you don't see enough
reviews for this new upgrade that you read the reviews for the older
version with 8 CDs, and then buy this one. I don't think I could have
found a better book on American Accent. The book is full of information
and guides to help you and the audio sounds excellent. I like the different
voices, and I really enjoy practicing with it. American Accent Guide
has answered all the questions I had, and I have already made a lot of
improvement on my accent. The more I use it the more I learn. I know that
I can reach my goal of speaking with an American Accent with this
excellent guide.

I recoomend it highly 12. August 2009

Format: Taschenbuch
English pronunciation is the most difficult to me especially since I did not pay much attention to pronunciation while studying English in my native country. For years, I have bought seven books containing CDs and DVD to improve my pronunciation. I admit that the American Accent Guide is not perfect (I wish it were more comprehensive), but it is the best among the books (CD) and DVD I have bought so far. I highly recommend it.

-The speakers in the book are precise in pronunciation and soothing to listen to. To me, it is important since I listen to them over and over again for my ear training.
-Contrasting similar proununciations (such as g in "virgin" vs. s in "version") is the most effective way to master pronunciation to me. Everybook has some, but the book has the most among the seven books and DVD.
-The book is the most comprehensive in coverage. It contains Section 4 on Rhythm and Section 8 Intonation and Stress and they are very helpful in conversation.

Cons:minor in nature
-Compared to the previous version, the new one has many more tracks. But I still think more tracks will be helpful since repetition is the key to master pronunciation.
-There are a few obvious errors (for example, /d/ pronunication in drain, dream ... drama in Section 7.2) and typos. But you can esaily notice them. No problem.

Essential book for all ESL educators 10. Juni 2012
Von Norman Weinstein - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Lujan's book is more than the finest book available in the field of accent reduction for ESL students - although earning that status is noteworthy in itself. She underscores the musicality of the English language in a comprehensive and enjoyable manner, one every student and instructor can enormously benefit from. Accompanying the text are audio files containing clear yet dramatically precise examples of everyday English, a contrast to the lifelessly mechanical voices found in the audio extras of other pronunciation programs. An outstanding text on every level.

The Most Helpful and Useful Book for Those Who Are Learning English 24. September 2008
Von Nee - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
The American Accent Guide has definitely been very helpful. First, it answered a lot of questions I had about English pronunciation that my ESL teachers and my friends who are native speakers were not able to answer for me.

The sections that I think have helped me most are the one on word stress and the one on rhythm. Learning the schwa vowel was very important because it helped me in learning to use proper word stress and rhythm.

I like having audio with different voices, and having all the audio on one CD make it easy to move around through all the tracts.

I definitely recommend this book to those who are learning English. It is worth it, and you will appreciate it.
