Synopsis
Many Albanians, who are descended from the Illyrians and Pelasgians, trace their roots to Achilles and other heroes of the siege of Troy, and claim Alexander the Great as their own. During twelve consecutive periods of foreign domination, the ethnic identity of the Albanians has been constantly threatened, first by the Eastern and Western empires of Christendom, then by the Ottoman Turks, and most recently by Soviet and Chinese communists.Present-day Albania is located between the former Yugoslavia and Greece on the western shore of the Balkan peninsula, and is the least known European country. As the last Turkish province in Europe it was tightly closed to foreigners over the centuries, and until recently the country was even more isolated by its postwar Communist regime. Historically described as mysterious and xenophobic, the people and the country are both little known to most westerners - but are destined to enter the world's consciousness situated as they are in the midst of explosive Balkan conflicts.With the employment of Albanian, French, Italian and many other documentary sources, the roots of Albanian civilization, the struggle of the Albanians' to maintain their cultural and linguistic integrity, the impact of foreign influence on the country, and its recent move toward democracy are all detailed here.

This book is quite expensive but if you are serious about Albanian studies it is one you want to have on your shelf.
Dr. Jaques appears to have done very thorough research on almost every phase of Albanian history. He seems to have spent a lifetime in gathering information from archives across the world. It is also obvious through reading the book that he has a firsthand knowledge of the language and people.
If you are looking for more than a brief glance at the history of the Albanians or are interested in a particular area of Albanian history, this book seems to have it all.
The book takes a very pro-Albanian stance in its view of history, but it is very helpful especially in understanding the Albanian perspective.

If you truly have an interest in the people of Albania there is no better book available. I have read most of the writing (in English) on Albania and this book always checks out with other sources. It is the one complete, unbiased (important in this reagion) account of the Albania people. If you are only casually interested, you will find it ponderous.

Being my self an Albanian,it has surpassed all my expectations.it is truly true in its content,revealing much of the truth about albania,that even albanians themselves do not know.my deepest sympathy goes to the author with this touching review of albania`s history.i think it made me prouder being an albanian then ever before.i strongly advise all albanians and friends of albania to add this rare item to their collection.
