From Booklist

This intensely erotic novel consists of the sexual awakening and subsequent adventures of Maria Luisa Ruiz-Poveda y Garcia de la Casa, a young woman from Madrid whose middle-class family calls her Lulu. Lulu's erotic tastes are always on the cutting edge: When just a schoolgirl, she is seduced by the much older Pablo, a friend of her older brother with a thing for adolescent girls. Later, while in the university, she is initiated into various nonmainstream sexual practices by Pablo, now a professor. Lulu develops an avid taste for Madrid's seamier sexual subcultures, ranging from bisexual group sex to a graphically depicted, nearly fatal bout with rough trade. Powerfully written and imparting a disturbing, immediate impact, Grandes' novel, like those of such other Grove authors as De Sade and R{‚}eage, might rouse the ire of censorious citizens in many libraries' communities, yet on purely literary grounds, it is a powerful essay into the darker side of female sexuality. From Kirkus Reviews

A self-consciously erotic novel set in Madrid by a first-time Spanish author, published in the UK last year and translated (noticeably, irritatingly) for a British readership. Like The Story of O and other Grove shockers from the heyday of the publisher's battles against censorship, The Ages of Lulu seems designed to titillate American readers with its vaguely elegant (read: European), louche sexual hedonism sanctified by the aura of the artistic. But with so much good dirty stuff available now, with all the battles fought and won for Burroughs and Rechy, with Sade receiving a major figure's classy biography last year, do we need this? Readers may be inclined to say no just a few pages into the preposterous opening: a description of the entranced Lulu watching a fabulous porn video, ``a thick thread of transparent saliva [hanging] from [her] bottom lip.'' We then see Lulu as a teen lose her virginity to her brother's pal, Pablo; later, after becoming a classics scholar (her specialty is translations of the saucy Roman poet Martial), she marries him but still has sexual hungers that compel her to cruise gay bars and do threesomes. (No condom makes an appearance at any time.) Later still, she leaves Pablo and has such a good time in some S&M play that she experiences a brush with death. Lulu is poked with scissor points, blindfolded, and roughly sodomized by anonymous strangers--but she always ends up loving it, and there's no enlightenment, even of the cheapest kind. The novel is written as if we live in repressed times, as if the act of reading it should be liberating. But it's not: It's a deadpan-dumb flesh book with Spanish characters who sound like Londoners. There are some semidangerous frissons to be had, but even so, plodding through this series of sex friezes is as engaging as reading a book of carpet samples. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. Well-written turnoff 2. März 1999

I ordered this book expecting a titillating read, and ended up enjoying it more as a well-written exposition of the obsessions of a rather unfortunate young woman.

Like Nabokov's _Lolita_, _The Ages of Lulu_ is often perceived as scandalous erotica, but in fact deals in a fairly pedestrian way with common forms of fetishism, especially sado-masochism and pedophilia (although the narrator is 15, hardly a little child, when she has her first experience). What is more interesting about the book, however, is the depiction of a woman who enjoys watching gay men having sex -- the flip-side, as she insightfully notes, of the much more common habit of men enjoying "lesbian" erotica. My own experience talking to real women makes me think that this kind of fetish is much more common than one might think, which makes the depiction of it in "Lulu" somewhat refreshing and novel.

Unlike some reviewers, I enjoyed the use of British English slang, which added an air of foreignness to the story -- entirely appropriate, since it takes place in Madrid. Ultimately, though, Lulu's self-destructive and selfish behavior, like that of the hero in _Lolita_, made me feel sorry for her and the people in her life (especially her neglected daughter), and the ending seemed abrupt and perfunctory, not well-thought-out at all. Perhaps Ms. Grandes was writing for a deadline. What prevents me from giving the book another star is the excessive use of erotic-lit cliches -- everything is swelling, bursting, exploding, over and over again, to the point where it sounds like a recipe, rather than a real experience.

So... if you're interested in a well-written fictional journal of female sexual obsession, I recommend this book. But if you're looking for an erousing piece of erotica, I can't say there's much in Lulu that will satisfy you.

To be fair, I am a 33-year-old male heterosexual with a conventional, liberal upbringing.

I read this book several years ago while in high school. I found this book to be very refreshing, fun, erotic, and interesting. I related to some parts of Lulu's experiences, and that to me is incredible because it made it more vivid. As I read this book, I could mentally picture each scene as if it was a movie, I could imagine Lulu's expressions of her emotions, and the emotions and expressions of the other characters too. I really enjoyed this book, I've read it more than once and passed it along to my friends who also enjoyed it immensely.
