Kurzbeschreibung

An army of the undead is gathering outside the town of Boonesville. Thanks to a special medallion left to him by his father, sixteen year old Kyle McGerrt is the only one who stands a chance against Bart Shires and his ghoulish soldiers. But following in his father’s footsteps won’t be easy.

“Charles Day brings a wicked sense of fun and a real talent for wild horror-fantasy adventure. Weird, crazy and totally enjoyable!”
~Jonathan Maberry, New York Times Bestselling author of Rot & Ruin and Fire & Ash

"Day adds to the Weird Western genre, a funny, tense, surprisingly philosophical, and first-page-to-last fun, the likes of which we haven't seen since Joe Lansdale took us back to the early days of Mud Creek.”
~ Bram Stoker Award-Winner Gary A. Braunbeck, To Each Their Darkness and A Cracked and Broken Path

“Charles Day has established himself as a maestro of the weird western. He's serving up the chills in this one, folks. If you're not scared by Charles Day's ghouls, you're made of sterner stuff than I.”
~Joe McKinney, author of Inheritance and The Savage Dead

"In The Hunt for the Ghoulish Bartender, Charles Day melds fantasy, horror, and the Old West into a macabre tale of justice, murder, retribution, and redemption. Young Adults of all ages should enjoy this very different coming-of-age tale."
Patrick Freivald"Author of Twice Shy and Special Dead"

“A rip-roaring weird western populated with fascinating characters, unique creatures, and a wonderful mash-up of genres. A fast-paced read sure to please young adult readers. I look forward to the rest of the trilogy and the further adventures of Kyle McGertt.”
--Taylor Grant, Award-Winning Writer, Filmmaker

"Unless I'm dreaming, a city guy from Long Island has just delivered an authentic vision of the Old West. Only in Charles Day's West, the ghouls are lurking. I could smell the gunpowder and saddle leather just as easily as I could scream in fright. THE GHOULISH BARTENDER is now on duty, and his customers are running up tabs of terror." Eric Shapiro, author of THE DEVOTED and STORIES FOR THE END OF THE WORLD

"In THE HUNT FOR THE GHOULISH BARTENDER, the first book in a new YA series chronicling the adventures of Kyle McGertt, Charles Day has written a wonderfully strange western novel, complete with dark mysticism and six-shooters and an overwhelming sense of peril. No doubt fans will be waiting anxiously for the next book in the series."
~ Aric Sundquist, author of THE END OF AUTUMN

"Young Kyle McGertt hunts the supernatural with the aid of visions from his father's magical medallion, and charismatic Bart Shires is next on the list. Will Kyle capture this diabolical fugitive, or will he fall prey to the ghoulish bartender? Charles Day takes his readers for a thrill ride with this exciting Western tale of horror and magic." ~Chantal Noordeloos, Author of the forthcoming, COYOTE, THE OUTLANDER.

"New territory has been paved within the YA genre, and it's purveyor is Charles Day. Though a relatively short novel, THE HUNT FOR THE GHOULISH BARTENDER is jam-packed with pillage, guns, a wayward saloon, classic heroes, and a bit of blood. I'm witnessing first hand the evolution of Charles Day's writing, and it's wonderful."
--J. Daniel Stone, author of THE ABSENCE OF LIGHT

5.0 von 5 Sternen Supernatural Horror in the old west=Awesome! 6. August 2013
Von J. Andrews - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Another great read from Charles Day, introducing us to his western side, now I was slower to read this one, not because it didn't have pace or was hard to get into, it's just I have only got into the western genre properly about a year ago. This the first in the trilogy of young Kyle Mcgerrt a young teen just turned the age of 16 forced to become a man early in the harshest of times, losing his Father to a band of outlaws and with the passing down of a powerful medallion which helped his Father and now him hunt down those who have been cursed by a tribe of Indians. Book 1 gives us some horror alongside the thrilling adventure, which although marketed for the young adult audience I wouldn't suggest reading it to the younger members of your family, especially at bedtime. Bart Shires AKA The Bartender a mean, cruel and sadistic antagonist is the head ghoul/living dead who builds his army and goes from town to town in his quest to get vicious vengence on the Indians who cursed him, eating and turning victims along the way. However there is a moment where if it had a chance of a bigger book albiet knocking the pace down a peg a past look into the human Bart Shires shows us a character with more depth then that of a regular boogeyman.

If you like a supernatural horror set in the old west where cowboys drank in saloons and camped under the stars then you will not go wrong with this one. Just be warned there is blood and guts.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Ghouls coming out of the woodwork. 2. August 2013
Von Brave Warrior - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Mobi/YA Horror: It's a fairly good book, but kinda violent for younger kids; probably 15 and up. There's a lot of drinking going on of two varieties, blood and booze. There's only one kind of eating: human flesh.

The book is the beginning of a series and it does end; which I like. It does have a slight cliffhanger to the next book like the old serials TV used to have (and Lost). Charles Day has a good writing style and the book was easy to follow. You don't meet Kyle until a quarter way through the book, so I kept wondering who our mystery-man Kyle was. He shows up and asks no question and gets to business.

Being an adult, I did want more back story on Kyle. (Who is funding Kyle's adventures with weapons)? He is sixteen going on 36 with his use of language, bravery, and reflexes. I would say he's a mini version of Lee Child's character, Jack Reacher. Kyle is obviously brave like his father, but I wanted to know more. Young readers probably won't question Kyle's motives like an adult.

I do recommend this book to young readers, even though it is violent with a high body count. Adult readers may want to skip it. There are a lot of inconsistencies about about time, place and behavior that adult may not agree with. (The leader of a gang would never pick berries for the poison and crush them up, he would have a lackey do it. While oil was valuable for kerosine in the west, salt was more valuable).

5.0 von 5 Sternen Good read for the over twelve crowd 29. Juli 2013

I the Hunt for the Ghoulish Bartender, we are introduced to Kyle McGerrt a 16 year old 'demon' hunter. Kyle inherits a medallion from his father after his death at the hands of the evil Bart and his gang. The story follows a maturing young man as he deals with evil, saves the life a little girl, and learns how to handle himself in difficult situations. There are a lot of good lessons to be learned in this book regarding avoiding temptation and evil and doing the right thing all the time. I eagerly await the next book in the series. 5.0 von 5 Sternen A great new addition to the Weird Western genre 26. Juli 2013
Von gary - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Charles Day's Hunt for the Ghoulish Bartender is a gritty and suspenseful read filled with heart. The characterization is great and Charles' ability to give us back story so smoothly while still keeping up the pace is astonishing. Great 'good guys' and 'evil guys'. And he touches nicely on the idea that even the worst people often don't think of themselves as 'the bad-guy' in their life and can rationalize the most awful things. I'm very much looking forward to where Charles takes us from here. If you're a weird western - Joe Lansdale fan, you'll love this one.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Remember the days when you were a child, and you played Cowboys and Indians? 22. Juli 2013
Von Scott L. Pratt - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Remember the days when you were a child, and you played Cowboys and Indians? Those were summers were always worry free and never ending for me. They were times that my imagination could pour from my soul and new realities were created for a couple of hours. Sometimes I long for those days again.

Last night I finished reading The Adventures of Kyle McGerrt: Hunt for the Ghoulish Bartender, and once again, I relived those youthful days of retreating into my imagination and becoming a hero that the world needed. However, this book gave my reminiscence something that is was always lacking, something that I could not pinpoint. This experience gave us the Ghoulish Bartender. Cowboys and Indians was always fun to play, but Cowboys and Ghouls would have been much more intriguing as a child.

I found The Adventures of Kyle McGerrt: Hunt for the Ghoulish Bartender to be an amazing read, that was very hard to put down. From the front, to the back, the action is non-stop and the characters come alive (Although some are only half alive) in every paragraph. Charles Day really put his heart and soul into this book, and it is seen on every page.

I am anxiously awaiting to see what happens in the second book of the trilogy, and am secretly hoping that the Ghoulish Bartender makes a miraculous appearance either there, or in book three. There is something "loveable" about that large and scary man, I just cannot out my finger on it. If he doesn't appear in the next books, I hope to see his further adventures in the upcoming comic books.

Whether you are a fan of the old west, or not, this book will keep you intrigued from page to page, anticipating where the action will take you next. It is a fantastic read for young and old, and everyone in between. In fact, regardless of your age, you will feel young again as you relive your childhood adventures, with a twist. Hell, I might make a run to the toy store to purchase a cowboy hat and plastic pistol/holster and wear it while reading the next book when it releases.
