This book is a personal memoir of an urban couple's journey to farming and NOT a how-to guide. It is sure to delight those interested in moving to the country or simply learning more about the struggles of sustainable farming.

When Tim and Liz Young decided to leave their comfortable suburban life and become first-time farmers in rural Georgia, they embarked on a journey that would change their lives. The Accidental Farmers reveals how the couple learned that hamburgers, bacon, and eggs don't come from the supermarket but from real animals that forge emotional bonds with their human caretakers. Seeking a middle path between a meatless lifestyle and the barbarism of factory food, Tim and Liz created Nature's Harmony Farm, a sustainable oasis where rare breed animals and humans live together searching for something nearly lost by both humans and the to live naturally off the land.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Tim Young is a farmer, best-selling author and award winning artisanal cheese maker in Georgia. While flying high over corporate America, Tim Young received a call he couldn't ignore. He shredded his business cards and said goodbye to the conveniences of urban life, to become a farmer and homesteader. Today, Tim is an award-winning cheese maker and author. He lives in Georgia with the most beautiful and caring woman in the world, and a little dog named Alfie that speaks to him in condescending, broken-English.

5.0 von 5 Sternen You Speak for Us! The small family farmer! 8. Juni 2011
Von Farmer Kate - Veröffentlicht auf
I just finished the Accidental Farmers and loved every chapter. It was interesting to get to know a little more about Liz and Tim Young, as I have been following them through Facebook and their podcasts for the past year and a half. Reading their story to farming made me feel inspired and a kindred spirit. My husband and I are "live-changers" too -- moving from New York City to suburban rural CT several years ago. Some passages were so funny (and so close to our own experiences), I had to read them aloud to my husband. We struggle with similar issues the Youngs do, and it was so nice to sort of "talk it out" with Tim as he explained decisions they've made on the farm. We appreciate so much their commitment to their land and their community and we hope this book will inspire others to do so as well. Great work Tim! I'm looking forward to watching your next move.

This is an interesting and enlightening story for those who have a starry-eyed view of what it would be like to leave the big city and live on a farm. I did have a problem with his not-so-subtle swipes at Joel Salatin. Aren't you all on the same side? What good does it do to snark at someone who is successfully getting out this vital message? Anyone who values the real food movement knows that we have enough opposition without taking swipes at someone who is already a target from those who oppose what you are trying to do! I probably would have given it 5 stars if it hadn't been for that

5.0 von 5 Sternen Motivating 2. März 2011
Von Deanna - Veröffentlicht auf
As someone who has no background in agriculture myself but was determined to somehow start a farm, this book is exactly what I needed to need to get myself going.

I did not know much about raising animals, except I knew there was a lot of mistreatment of our livestock happening in this world. Tim has helped show me that just because something has been done in the past a certain way, it doesn't make it right. This book has also showed me that, the only thing standing in the way of my farm's growth, is myself.

The author also did a great job of writing in a way that you can really picture his pigs running around the woods, and the cows enjoying fresh grass, while the chickens clean up behind them.

Outstanding book, well worth your time and money.

5.0 von 5 Sternen very real! LOVED it! 21. November 2012

What stuck out the most to me in this book is their willingness to be open and very real about the hardships and unfortunate reality of farming. We've become so used to feed lot type farming that we don't even realize that the way they've bred their animals is exactly how it should be done.
They didn't have to share all the nitty gritty details that would get nasty feedback but they did because they're being honest.
My family and I left the city for our dream of farming 6 months ago and we've experiences a lot of similar things, it ain't all pretty that is for sure! But it all brings us closer to the way it should be and definitely brings a reality of what our food even is.

Thank you for writing this! Hope to meet ya'll soon!

5.0 von 5 Sternen If you think you want to be a farmer, read this...also, if you want to know more about your farmer. 11. März 2011
Von Tricia Houston - Veröffentlicht auf
I just finished the book at 4 am this morning, after picking it back up at 2am and not being able to put it down.I found it compelling reading, sweeping me along in Tim and Liz's journey, one which I recently told them, mirrors mine in many ways. As a small scale family farmer in Northern Kentucky, I found Nature's Harmony Farm through a friends link on Facebook.I read through their website, visited their videos, have yet to hear a podcast (though I bet they are great), and finally read the book.It really tells it like it is. I bought my farm the same year as the Young's (though only quit my corporate job this past May) and was overjoyed to find a feeling of kinship in their story, one which reconfirmed my own journey. I am not as far along in my journey, but reading about their trials and tribulations gears me up for the next phase of my own journey. Because I have a personal connection as a farmer, I laughed at parts of the book, cried at others, and was intensely connected all the way through. In the end, I loved this book as much as I loved Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. It helped me to reset my direction and gave me a boost to rediscover why I became a farmer.
