Synopsis

When a lone gunman goes on a shooting spree aboard a packedSan Francisco ferry, Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer is called in to investigate. At the scene she finds three people dead and fellow Women's Murder Club member Claire Washburn fighting for her life. Lindsay promises to find whoever did this. But it's a promise she may not be able to keep. As the investigation makes its way to court, news of a child abduction comes through. Lindsay discovers that more children have been taken. But with no ransom demands the abductions don't seem to make sense -- unless the kidnappers aren't planning on returning their hostages! The clock is ticking as Lindsay tries to fit all the pieces together. She knows that if she doesn't find the children quickly it will be too late!

It seems that there is a constant up and down in the Women's Murder Club series. "The 5th Horseman" definitely was an "up", whereas "The 6th Target" to me was rather a (let)-"down":

"The 6th Target" consists of three completely different investigations, which are not connected to each other at all. I had the impression that they should have been published as short stories instead of being sold to the readers as "the next thrilling novel in the Women's Murder Club series". Neither was it very thrilling nor was it a page-turner. I am sorry to say that the synopsis is more thrilling than "The 6th Target" itself. Moreover there was no character development whatsoever, the subplots seemed pointless and dull.

Usually you more or less know what to expect when you pick up one of Patterson's books: short chapters, his trademark fast pace, several twists and turns. The only things you get here are the short chapters and mildly entertaining, straightforward 400 and something pages. If you think you just have to have "The 6th Target" as not to miss out on anything - go ahead and get it. It is nothing to write home about, though. # 7 in this series ("7th Heaven") is a great read, however!

If you think you just have to have "The 6th Target", I recommend waiting for the paperback to be published. You really won't miss out on much!

This is Patterson's best book. I've read nearly all and while I am not his biggest fan, I did find this hard to put down. His command of language, his intricate plotting his deft use of analagy, all combine to make this a very good read.

I suddenly find myself eagerly anticipating Patterson's next book. The visual imagery presented here is excellent. If you like this author, you will enjoy this book.

When a man starts shooting people on the Del Norte ferry, he also hits one of the members of the Women's Murder Club. Lindsay Boxer works hard to get him before a jury, but it may not have been enough and the shooter could be acquitted by the jury.
Meanwhile, someone is abducting little children and their nannies and the police are waiting anxiously for ransom notes and leads. But days go by and there are neither ransom notes nor useful leads. Are the children and their nannies already dead?
And on top of that, someone in Cindys new apartment building is going crazy and killing her neighbors one by one. Lindsay has to solve the case fast or her friend could be next.

Once again another suspenseful book about the Women's Murder Club which could be mostly due to the very short chapters that are one of Patterson's trademarks by now. Unfortunately, the Women's Murder Club doesn't really work together to solve the cases this time, but seems to be more of a girls' night out now and then. It also seems like a new habit is starting up with having multiple cases to solve in each book (this already happened in the last book). Sadly, those cases don't tie up in the end, but each one is a case of its own. On the one hand, this is nice because it shows the stressful life of police detectives who have more cases to work than just one, but on the other hand the cases become superficial and the resolutions aren't that much of a surprise anymore. As a fan of the Women's Murder Club, I'd still say this book is a must-have and it is suspenseful "enough". I liked it as well as most of the other books.
But the name "James Patterson" seems to have become a whole industry with lots of co-writers and lots of publications each year and I believe it's starting to affect the quality of the books in a negative way.
