Kurzbeschreibung

8. Mai 2012
Worry-prone Frankie keeps his family secret under control — until a bold, inquisitive girl enters his life — in this warm, witty, and captivating YA novel.

Twelve-year-old Frankie Parsons is a talented kid with a quirky family, a best friend named Gigs, and a voice of anxiety constantly nibbling in his head: Could that kidney-shaped spot on his chest be a galloping cancer? Are the smoke alarm batteries flat? Has his cat, The Fat Controller, given them all worms? Only Ma, who never leaves home, takes Frankie’s worries seriously. But then, it is Ma who is the cause of the most troubling question of all, the one Frankie can never bring himself to ask. When a new girl arrives at school — a daring free spirit with unavoidable questions of her own — Frankie’s carefully guarded world begins to unravel, leading him to a painful confrontation with the ultimate 10 p.m. question. Deftly told with humor, poignancy, and an endearing cast of characters, The 10 P.M. Question will touch everyone who has ever felt set apart.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Beautiful Book 28. September 2010
Von Jenny Jones - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
The 10pm Question is a heartbreakingly beautiful and sensitive book, with a brilliant narrative style that draws the reader further and further into Frankie's strange, moving and at times, completely charming world. I loved the character sketches and the descriptions of Frankie's day to day life, The Aunties, Microsoft the Dog, Sydney, Gigs, Uncle George, Gordana and Louis. But at the heart of it all, what is the most compelling about the story is the gentle unravelling of Frankie and Ma's troubled relationship and the effect it has on Frankie, which the author handles with great empathy and sensitivity.

I had to order the book from New Zealand to get hold of my copy originally, but now its released in the USA I hope it gets the wider recognition it truly deserves.

4.0 von 5 Sternen The 10 PM Question 6. Januar 2011
Von Kara Cardwell - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This is not what I expected. I thought this book was about how the new girl shakes up everything, and she does but not in the way I thought. She helps change important issues that aren't often explored in young children's books. The wonderful thing about this book's message is that it isn't forced; it shows up silently half way through the book and refuses to leave.

What made the message stick is that you won't be pounded with not so subliminal subliminal messages. The story was packed full with other quirky aspects, like a secret language, four obese but really interesting aunts, and a main character who can name more birds than some ornithologist could. May favorite part was the way people were compared to birds. It was so surprising how easily the characters seemed to fit the characteristics of birds. It made me wonder what kind of bird I am. Overall, it was a sweet and quick read full of relatable topics that shows why it deserved to be a finalist in the Montana book awards.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Unique characters and imagery make this a one-of-a-kind reading experience 8. Dezember 2010
Von M. Knapp - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This book was a delight. "Quirky" doesn't do it justice, and it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but for young adult readers looking for a full-bodied reading experience, this book is perfect. Frankie, Gigs and Sydney are extremely likeable young people, each with a unique view of the world. De Goldi's inventiveness knows no bounds: rogue band-aids, "Uncle George" and the stress-testing science project with the Aunties....and those are just in the first few chapters. The New Zealand slang takes a little getting used to, and (for me) the secret language got a little old, but this is a great book for anyone who reads for the delightful pleasure of escaping into the lives of others. Think of STARGIRL crossed with THE OSTRICH BOYS and narrated by a slightly older Jason Blake (from ANYTHING BUT TYPICAL) and you will have a sense of this book. Recommended for teens (and older) who like to read.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Quirky and Emotionally Satisfying 5. Februar 2012
Von Jennifer Donovan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The 10 PM Question features 12-year-old Frankie Parsons. Each night he lies awake in bed, worrying. By 10 p.m., he's usually searched out his mom to ply her for answers or to simply receive some comfort.

But other then having an overactive worrying imagination, he's a perfectly normal kid. He and his best friend Gigs have a made-up language and made-up games that, along with time, has cemented their friendship. He's waiting for the switch to turn on that will make girls interesting and attractive, and that might be happening when free-spirit Sydney moves to his class and they are partnered up on a project.

No one really talks about Ma -- not his siblings, not Uncle George (who is really his father with just an odd name that has stuck), but Frankie worries about her too. He worries why she doesn't leave the house, and begins to wonder if he might end up like her. But Sydney asks a lot of questions. At first he does everything he can to avoid them, but in the end letting himself get to know her and be known by her, helps him to figure himself out a little bit more.

I can't put my finger on why exactly, but this book feels firmly like a book for middle schoolers and above. It doesn't have a lot of swearing or any activities that would worry the parent of a child younger than 13, but there are some mature themes mentioned. I love that there is a true coning-of-age YA book that should appeal to ages 13 and up out there that isn't full of explicit language and sex.

It's also one sure to appeal to adults who are fans of the coming-of-age tale (like me!). I like that it has a boy protagonist, but because the emotional quotient is very high it will also appeal to girls (and of course he has a girl best friend/perhaps more than a friend).

And if you like quirky -- this one has just enough to keep you smiling, though not enough to annoy you if you don't like quirky (although if that's your opinion, I strongly feel you are missing out). A father called Uncle George? A cat named the Fat Controller? A made-up language? It's all there.

AUDIOBOOK NOTES: The accented reader Stig Wemyss added to that element of place (New Zealand) that resonated loudly with this American listener.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Absolutely Delightful 23. März 2011
Von Christina (A Reader of Fictions) - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I love love loved this book. Frankie is such an awesome narrator. He is young, which usually loses my interest, but incredibly clever and real. Being a worrier myself, I totally found myself rooting for him and hoping he would find a way to deal. The lists that he makes to calm himself down are something I can relate to as well. My lists aren't mental like his, but I do compulsively keep track of certain things (mostly to do with reading). I also sometimes write lists just for the sheer pleasure and soothingness of creating them.

Frankie is not the only character who is well-drawn. The whole cast feels completely real and full of life, from the big fat aunts to the dad called Uncle George by everyone (even though he's not an uncle) to the family cat (The Fat Controller) to the teacher at Frankie's school. Everyone has there own crazy quirks and I could connect with them all.

Part of the reason the story is so successful, despite having a rather contemplative plot, is the focus on the relationships between family and friends. De Goldi has captured how a family can be full of love and still be dysfunctional. While the story does have a bit of an overarching plot, it's not really what you think it is at the beginning and the resolution isn't momentous. This is a story of Frankie's personal journey to learn to understand himself and his family.

Everyone should read this. It is absolutely delightful! Fans of A Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time should definitely check this out.
