OK first of all I have to say that I just used the Lonely Planet, so I don't have any comparison. But in comparison to Lonely Planets of other countries I was not very happy with this one.
First of all, many maps are inaccurate, what is really problematic if you are e.g. looking for a certain hostel and you do not find it because the map is wrong.
It is not new that even Thais do not know when buses leave, but why does LP print many departure times - most of them are wrong, of course, because the timetable seems to change daily. You do not realize it at once an spend a lot of time at many bus terminals. Many chapters are too long with stuff you do not need, and many really interesting places are mentioned in just a few words. One example: the National Parks, Thailand is a land with many NP, and important hints are not given in LP, e.g. Khao Yai NP is very large, you have to hitch, or rent a motorbike in Pak Chong, it is just a sentence that can help so much. In Khao Sok NP you do not need a morotbike at all (it is funny to go a hundred Km to get there and realize it) - OK perhaps not everybody likes NP that much as I do, but on the other hand, Bangkok has really many pages in the LP. Some large towns are not mentioned in the LP, e.g. Nakhon Sawan, Suphanburi - why not. Ok they are not on a tourist route, they are of the beaten track, but they are interesting and worth a visit, because they are of the beaten track, and I haven't seen a tourist there once. Isn't LP supposed to be a guide for people that are searching for adventures :-)(it says so in the foreword) - thank you LP, because if you mention it I would probably have seen one or even more tourists. But I think there are more towns like that, (I recommend the North-East if you cannot stand Westeners for a time).
One the one hand, LP was OK but not worth the money and has to improve. The normal tourist tracks get too much space in it, and they are not really worth it. On the other hand, I do not know any other guide that could be better than LP, or I cannot remember one. Therefore I can just say, if you want to go to Thailand and use the main routes, LP is just OK', is the only choice. Have fun in Thailand and do not forget to smile. Kop koon Krup

We went to Thailand with a group of people, and our guide was the lonely planet book. I have to agree with the other people, that the information given is interesting, cultural background etc. BUT... we tried to rely on the times for buses, trains etc. THEY ARE WRONG!!! at least a lot of them. And its a desaster if u plan 2 hours for a special distance (as mentioned in the lonely planet) and the bus really takes 8 hours... u cant plan with this. As well some of the hostels described in the book as clean and nice are really bad places (we looked around in some).
So if u want to know about people, religion, interesting places to go and so on, the lonely planet will do a good job, but dont plan your trip according to the times/distances and hostels given!!!

not the best travel guide 9. Juni 2002
Von John Singleton - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Since 1987 I have been buying each new edition of the Lonely Planet Thailand travel guide. Back in the 1980s, this was the only worthwhile travel guide to Thailand, but Lonely Planet and Joe Cummings are clearly resting on their laurels. There is very little new material in each new edition that comes out every few years. Now, in 2002, there are lots of new and better
guidebooks out there. I can recommend Insight Guides, Rough Guides, and DK travel guides, to name only a few good ones.
Joe Cummings has been the main author of the Thailand Travel
Guide for over two decades. He is also the author of many other
travel guidebooks published by Lonely Planet. The problem with his books is that he is not excited about travel, and this feeling comes through in his guidebooks. He is an expert on Asian art history, and I think that it would be more appropriate if he wrote books specifically about this subject, instead of travel guides for the general public.
To get a good feeling about the kind of writer that Joe Cummings is, I would strongly recommend that you also read through the reviews of his Travel Guide to Laos, which is also
published by Lonely Planet.

Not much of a revision 18. April 2002
Von Ein Kunde - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I was surprised to see that this revision contained very little additional or revised information. During my travels up north, for example, I found in several cases that certain lodgings that had been shut for several years still appeared in the "new" edition. Coupled with other dated or inaccurate information, it appears that the authors actually visited and researched few of the locations that were off the beaten track. It is almost as though Lonely Planet have cornered the travel book market for Thailand, and there is little incentive to put a great deal of effort into the new revisions, since it appears that nearly everyone going to Thailand buys the LP guide anyway.

best LP guide I've used so far 18. Oktober 2001
Von Robert Bach - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I recently completed a trip through India, Nepal, Thailand and China, and used Lonely Planet guides for all four countries. They all had their ups and downs, but I thought the Thailand one was the best, by far. First it was the most accurate, that is the info was closest to what I actually encounted while travelling around. And second it had the most evocative and confident prose. One could really sense the authors' strong affinity for the country. Like another reviewer wrote, Cummings doesn't talk down to his readers yet he doesn't pander either.

I felt very much as if I had my own personal guide leading the way with the Thailand book. The other three seemed more like compendia of information gathered without regard to any central zeitgeist.

The Pattaya reviewers must have tourist businesses in that city! The authors seemed very even-handed in their treatment of the city nonethess. Furthermore 12 pages on any destination seems plenty to me, however, so I don't understand tte complaint.

I also used LP's Thai Phrasebook and found it very useful.
