a phrasebook from experience
I went to Thailand to work in refugee camps in 1980 after getting a degree in English as a Second Language at the University of Hawaii. I decided to write books on the Thai language after experiencing a lot of problems learning the language from materials available then. I've tried to develop the easiest transliteration and tone writing system I could. The tones are typed in with a specially developed font. The vocabulary and phrase selection of the book was influenced by what travellers would need, and also by typical things Thais talk about. This phrasebook is small, with no Thai script, and is meant to be a book a traveller could carry around for easy reference. It could also be used by students of Thai for quick reference and study of tones (as the markers are easy to read). I believe all of the Thai in the book is correct and common, as I lived in Thailand for 15 years and worked on language materials with many Thai language teachers. This books joins a large number of phrasebooks published by Hippocrene Books. I have another, larger book on Thai called Essential Thai, published in Bangkok by the Bangkok Post. It's not for sale in stores outside of Thailand, but can be ordered through the Bangkok Post website. This book came out two years ago and has been very popular in Thailand. Essential Thai includes a section on Thai writing, and has a step-by-step explanation of basic Thai sentence structure, plus a 60 minute pronunciation tape. All vocabulary and examples are written in Thai script. At this time I'm completing advanced books on Thai sentence structure and vocabulary. I hope to have these books published next year. Thanks for your interest, and good luck in learning Thai!
