Nellie Bly took an undercover journalist assignment to pretend to be insane to investigate reports of brutality and neglect at mental asylums. After a night of practicing deranged expressions in front of a mirror, she checked into a working-class boarding-house where she feigned insanity so well that everyone was convinced. She was then examined by several doctors, who all declared her to be insane, too.
Committed to an asylum, Bly experienced its dire conditions firsthand: horrible spoiled food; the patients mistreated and abused; unclean and unsanitary conditions. Furthermore, speaking with her fellow patients, Bly was convinced that some were as sane as she was. After ten days, Bly was released from the asylum with her editor's help and she published her experience in book form as "Ten Days in a Mad-House." It caused a sensation and brought her lasting fame. More importantly, thanks to this book, living conditions for the insane were improved and funds for their care were increased.

Amazing book, breath-taking story considering that it actually happened to Miss Bly. Its historical value is obvious: On the hand because it unreveals a lot about the circumstances in mad-houses during those decades, on the other hand because it teaches the reader some interesting details about journalism history.

The book provides an insightful perspective into the way that the mentally ill were treated during the latter part of the 19th Century. Nellie's intrusion into this world is nothing short of frightening. What shocks me the most isn't the way the patients are treated, but the ease with which a moderately sane person could find herself taken out of society and placed in a world where madness was the norm. A wonderful short read, and a must for anyone studying late 19th century society (sane or insane).

I downloaded an audio version of this book. I like the concept that she purposefully went to a Mad House. Her details are amazing. I work in a mental hospital and I reflected on the similarities and differences of the experiences. I'm glad that through this writing, things changed for this and other hospitals at the time. It was worth listening to.

This is a great book and took a lot of guts to write. Very frightening how she and others were treated. Some parts I felt so helpless and tearful reading. I don't think many of us could do and endure and come out as well as she did, then write about it. Amazing soul she had. Gregg and Matt, glad you brought this out in the open for us to read. Thank you.
