Gr 6 Up-Jacobs looks at court decisions concerning issues such as sexual harassment at school and/or work, the legality of dress codes, drug testing for athletes, freedom of expression at school, censoring the school newspaper, school prayer, and the use of the death penalty for teens. He begins by giving readers basic facts to understand these issues better, including information about how the Supreme Court works, facts about the United States Constitution, and how to do legal research. The body of the book consists of 21 issues or legal cases involving young people, each of which begins with a presentation of the facts in the case much as they would be heard by the judge and/or the jury. A set of thought-provoking questions then prompts readers to be the judge. The outcome follows unless the disposition of the case is unresolved. The author then cites several related cases and provides topics for discussion and other activities. A common component in these cases, according to Jacobs, is that the person involved has not only questioned the fairness of the law, but has also had the courage to take his concerns into the courtroom. Great book for high school law teachers!

As a high school law teacher, I found this book a great resource for student discussions. The court cases are written in easy to understand "kid" language. Both sides are presented clearly and fairly. Additional related discussion questions are presented with each case as well as possible answers. My students found the court cases relevant and interesting. At the end of each section, additional court cases are listed to review. It's a great book for teenagers!

Right off the bat I want to notify you that this is a book about law and trial. Now, the pros and cons of this book, one of the pros of this book is the fact that it was non-fiction. It didn't tell a fake story, it was all real. Something else positive about this book is that you learn something about the law each case.
Some cons of the book are the number of pages. It is a short book. Another problem I had was the time spent writing about each case. I feel the author could have elaborated on the case more. For example, the author could have showed the evidence from the case and gave the defending argument, instead of only giving the prosecutions argument.
Overall the good and bad, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the law and non-fiction books that are short and to the point.
So go out to the library and check out "Teens on Trial."
