Not a day, but 24 one-hour Java lessons aimed at non-programmers and those with little programming experience. Sams Teach Yourself Java 2 in 24 Hours certainly starts at the beginning with an overview of programming as an activity, downloading SDK from Sun and installing it under Windows, Linux and Solaris. The author makes few assumptions about his readers computing expertise and every chapter ends in a Q and A session followed by a quiz.

The book is divided into six sections and a collection of useful appendices. Section II introduces programming basics including variables and constants, strings, conditional tests, loops and then objects and inheritance. By the halfway point you are building a simple visual interface using Swing and the Abstract Windowing Interface--though you will have to wait a couple of hours before you learn how to make it do something.

Sams Teach Yourself Java 2 in 24 Hours probably won't unless you're already a fairly good programmer in another language. But if you worked through it assiduously you would have a basic understanding of the Java language. What you won't have is the experience which makes it useful.

However, the example programs Cadenhead works you through are easily adapted and extended, which provides a starting point for practice. Cadenhead's Teach Yourself Java 2 in 24 Hours is a definite beginner's book, a self-tutorial in 24 one-hour chapters. The guides on networking, Threads (the ability of Java to multitask by allowing for multiple processes and actions at the same time), and Swing (a powerful Java interface package for visual design) are for advanced Java programmers but will fit well within most libraries.

Für Anfänger wie für Fortgeschrittene gleichermaßen ein tolles Buch das keinen von beiden überfordert. Ab der schon mehrfach erwähnten Hour 10 werden Fortgeschrittene erst gefordert werden, für Anfänger wie das Buch von da an richtig anspruchsvoll, aber trotzdem machbar - Dank der funktionierenden Codebeispiele! Man lernt auch an Codebeispielen zu lernen, denn das muss man außerhalb des Erklärungsluxus den dieses Buch bietet sowieso, längst nicht überall kriegt man so ausführliche Erklärungen wie hier.

Tolles Buch das witzig geschrieben ist und damit zum weiterlesen motiviert. Für Anfänger ideal!

This book is a solid learning tool. I have to agree with the reviewer that said the book does get tough after chapter 9. The vast majority of the code I've tried works. This book does a good job of getting you up to speed on Java. I would suggest using this book as a starting point and going else where to get really indepth information. As far as getting a clue about Java, this book is definite buy.

Java is not an easy language to learn which is why I believe some folks have chosen to give it a low mark. I didn't find any errors in this book which is refreshing after reading SQL in 24 hours (Bad Book). I didn't however run very much of the code in the book but I did examine most of the code thoroughly and didn't find anything major. The reason I didn't run the examples is that I started with much more advanced books and got knocked back. So I picked this one up and it helped me out quite a bit, in understanding concepts and understanding the classes included in the jdk. The book is written on a very personal level which I liked a lot and I thought the author was funny.

The book does get much more advanced starting in chapter 10, though this is just a part of learning java. The only reason that I didn't give this book a 5 is that author fails to completely explain a few of the examples in the book. This just made me read the examples over and over again until I understood them. Good learning tool. I would definetly not suggest reading Java 2 in 21 days after a book like this, I would go with Beginning Java 2 by Ivor Horton, which is an excellent book but I wouldn't start with Ivor's book, if your knowledge about java=0.

Poorly organized

before hour10 is ok...
This book is ok from hour 1 to 9, but as soon as i go to hour 10, something is getting me confused. I have only read up to 12, so i don't know how it will be after 12....

Don't waste your time and money!
You have enough choices to get a better book than this one. I am shameful for my own selection. However, this book may be suitable for some others who like this style.
