HASH(0x9cd2cdf8) von 5 Sternen An excellent introduction to the Irish language, but not exactly complete 16. Mai 2012

I have only been studying Irish with this course for about two weeks, but I felt like I wanted to defend this course against some of the negative reviews which seem to be posted by people who have no idea how to study a language.
First of all, let me concede that the reviewers who attack the organization of this course are correct on that point, which is why I gave the course four stars instead of five. Also, I would have preferred if the vocabulary was presented as single words rather than phrases. But if you aren't a brainless git, you shouldn't have a problem figuring some things out for yourself.
As for the complaints about the recordings being ''too fast'', if you want to learn any language, you had better get used to speaking at normal speed and also learning to listen to authentic dialogue. If you want more practice with your pronunciation, I recommend Irish, Q&S: Learn to Speak and Understand Irish (Gaelic) with Pimsleur Language Programs (Pimsleur Quick and Simple). In fact, Pimsleur would be an excellent supplement. I also suggest getting Essential Irish Grammar: A Teach Yourself Guide (Teach Yourself Language). In working through the grammar exercises, you'll find much information that enforces what you're learning in Ó Sé's text. That being said, the fact that some supplementary materials are needed is another reason this course merits a four star review rather than five. It's not ''Complete'' in the sense that you really need more than one book to study the language, but then again what course is?
As for why I enjoy this course so much, I think it has to do with the style of the text. I like learning both a few conversation bits AND I'm a grammar nerd. Teach Yourself Irish is jam-packed with grammar info, so rather than only learning a few phrases for everyday speech, you're also learning the nuts and bolts of the language. I've found that after only a couple of weeks, I'm already able to compose my own short sentences and pick out words and phrases from Irish television and radio. (I really recommend watching as much of the Irish language television channel, TG4, as you can. Listening to Raidió na Gaeltachta wouldn't hurt either). I also like that this course offers some info on the Munster dialect, which I plan to focus on.
In all, I highly recommend this book as an introduction to Irish. It's not complete, and there are some organizational issues, but if you're fairly bright and take it slowly, you'll find yourself learning the beautiful Irish language.

HASH(0x9de3eedc) von 5 Sternen Not the best, not the worst... 20. August 2013

Honestly, the Teach Yourself Series is (as anyone will tell you) very hit or miss. This one is comfortably in the middle, I would say.
The biggest positive is the recordings which are spoken very clearly in what seems to be a fairly straightforward dialect - you'll quickly learn that dialects can make or break a student of Irish - and, well, they exist. Written Irish is fascinatingly clear and phonetic, just according to a DRAMATICALLY different set of phonetic rules that those of English. It takes a while to wrap your head around it and, unfortunately, it's not in a "different alphabet" so, there's no "transliteration" help available... the recordings are CRUCIAL.
That said, the recordings are one track per chapter, which is a big bummer because a chapter may include multiple dialogues and listening practices. I'm not sure why they didn't break them out like they did for, say, Chinese, Arabic, or Modern Persian.
All in all, I'd recommend it as a comfortably priced, totally acceptable introduction to the Irish language...

I am using this book in conjunction with lots of online learning sources. It is helping me learn the whys of the grammar more than any other source. The recordings are helpful, but hard to match up with the book at times. I like the exercises at the end of each unit. I am halfway through the book and still happily going on.

It's not a "for dummies" level. You will have to put some effort into it, but hearing the language spoken as apposed to trying to figure out the pronunciation from a book alone makes this product well worth it.
It moves a little fast at first so the first couple of lessons you will just replay a lot until you get used to how it goes through it.
Good solid product and should give you a solid base introduction to the language

HASH(0x9e5b7084) von 5 Sternen One cannot learn at this pace. 19. November 2012

I recently purchased the book and CDs to learn Irish for a trip I am planning. Unfortunately, I will not be learning anything from this purchase. The listening lessons progress far too rapidly to achieve any understanding of the language. I became frustrated after 30 minutes of trying to repeat words that were foreign to my tongue and not sufficiently sounded out. If one wants to learn to speak Irish, I suggest not buying this book/CD combo. I purchased Pimsler's Irish, and have learned in four half-hour lessons enough to converse intelligently with native speakers!
