Produktbeschreibungen

Amazon.com

In a swirling universe filled with death and life, corruption and innocence, this mesmerizing novel takes us on a wondrous journey back through the centuries to a civilization half-human, of wholly mysterious origin, at odds with mortality and immortality, justice and guilt. It is an enchanted, hypnotic world that could only come from the imagination of Anne Rice... -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

From Booklist

Rice has now completed a trilogy that began with The Witching Hour (1990) and continued with Lasher. This saga, which could easily keep Rice busy for years to come, is about a race of giants, the Taltos, that grow to their full size within hours after their births. In this installment, Rice has lightened up a bit, leaving all the bloody eroticism of her earlier books for more inventive, less wrenching situations and more amusing and sympathetic characters. Rice fans will still find lots of faked arcane history, sex, hocus-pocus, conspiracy, and weirdness, but there's tenderness here, even thoughtful allegory, and a comprehensible plot. Unlike Lasher, this novel's Taltos is ancient and kindly. Calling himself Mr. Ash, he poses as a reclusive billionaire, an immensely tall and romantically handsome genius who mass-produces dolls and toys and lives chastely within the cocoon of great wealth. But Ash, actually Ashlar, is haunted by centuries-old memories of the brutal abuse of his race by humans. He wonders if he's the only survivor and barely acknowledges the faint hope of finding a female Taltos. Meanwhile, all kinds of violent events have taken place among the witchy Mayfairs of New Orleans. Rowan has survived Lasher's siege only to learn that her pretty but naughty, redheaded 13-year-old cousin Mona is pregnant with Rowan's husband's child. Ashlar and the Mayfair witches end up joining forces to thwart whoever is murdering their mutual friends, only to discover that Mona has a surprise for everyone. Rice's loyal disciples will be pleased. Donna Seaman -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Gebundene Ausgabe .

I really like Anne Rice, don't misunderstand me, but it's true... Anne Rice could go on for pages describing a color or a curtain... That part of it get's really boring!! However, after I read Taltos, I felt that is was a good final novel (it IS the final novel, right?) for the Mayfair series. The story was good, Ashlar was cool, Mona needed some spanking, Mary Jane has a good head on her shoulders, Michael is... Irish? (I think Mike is "weak" at heart, and as a man.) The book is worth buying, and worth reading. The Witching Hour was her best one, though.

One last thing, Anne Rice needs to cut down on the descriptions! It's like, ("The circle was green, green with a tint of yellow, mixed with red, and the circle was as big as a lifesaver, the lines were...blah blah!!!") We get it, it's a green circle! But you know what I mean. Anyways, it's worth reading, if you can SCAN through her million page descriptions... makes it even better.

Though it is the 3rd in the series, I had not read any of the witch books by Anne Rice before reading "Taltos." I was worried when I purchased it that I might be tragically lost, not having followed the previous stories of Rowan, Mona, etc. But I was instantly drawn in and swept away, due mostly to Mr. Ash, a great character that recalls some of Anne Rice's other tragic protagonists like Louis from the vampire series or Azriel from "Servant of the Bones." As I said before, I have yet to read the prior 2 books in the witch saga, but with "Taltos" they aren't absolutely necessary. This book isn't REALLY about the Mayfair family but instead uses them as a backdrop to tell a fascinating tale of an ancient race - the Taltos - who have lived, disguised, among humans since time began! I enjoyed the pacing of this book, its humor, its mystery, but most of all the beauty of the Taltos, who were completely fascinating and essentially a departure from Anne's vampires and ghosts. She has created, in "Taltos," something new and different. I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 because its ending seemed a bit rushed and wasn't quite the payoff I had hoped for... 50 more pages might have done it! I can see why others might not have felt this an appropriate conclusion to the witch tales, since it wasn't so much about them. But maybe Anne will one day give us more Mona, more Mary Jane, and hopefully more Mr. Ash! Still, it stands on its own as a thoroughly enjoyable book, I recommend it!

No great shakes 28. August 2002

Those who expected to meet with the Taltos yet another species like Anne Rices vampires, who are scary yet fascinating and irresistable, will be disappointed. Hard as Rice might try, I cannot get myself to like the Taltos or care about them; I find them mostly repulsive. In fact, the more she explained about them and their ways, the less I wanted to know.
The language of this story gets somewhat tedious after a while; Rice is so impressed with her characters that she just can't repeat often enough how very "lovely" they are, how "luscious" their appearances and garb- too gushy for comfort. The story and its "heroes" largely fail to touch me or make me sympathize - for me Anne Rice did her best work in the first three books of the Vampire Chronicles and went downhill from there ever since.

Ms. Rice tantalized and mystified us with probably the best work since the first two "Vampire" books when she wrote "The Witching Hour". Lesen Sie weiter...

Another great one from Anne Rice
I've read several reviews of this book and finally I decided that someone had to come to Taltos's defense. I don't understand why everyone was so disappointed in this novel. Lesen Sie weiter...
