From Booklist

Georgetown University professor Tannen specializes in the seemingly arcane field of sociolinguistics, yet two of her books have been wildly successful best-sellers: That's Not What I Meant: How Conversational Style Makes or Breaks Your Relations with Others (1986) and You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation (1990). This second title sold more than quarter of a million copies in hardcover and well over one million in paperback, and it lasted for more than two years on the New York Times' best-seller lists. Her new book is meant as the third in this series of investigations into what we say and how we say it and how this affects our ability to be understood and to get along with others. Here Tannen considers conversations, both informal and formal, in the workplace. She is most interested in gender differences in conversational style but considers age, class, ethnic, and geographical distinctions as well, while arguing that to be successful, we must not adopt or discount other styles, but rather, make an effort to understand and to learn from them. From Kirkus Reviews

The workplace (primarily the office) is the setting for this third volume of Tannen's Linguistics Lite trilogy. Tannen (Sociolinguistics/Georgetown) sticks close to the main idea she popularized almost a decade ago in That's Not What I Meant (1985): Men and women have different conversational styles that are equally valid (though unequally valued). Here, she describes women's disadvantages in the workplace: They are paid less than men for the same work and face ``sexism'' (a term Tannen keeps dubiously between quotation marks), a glass ceiling, and sexual harassment. Why do such problems persist? Tannen considers the difference in male and female conversational style as a primary cause. Women are likely to have an indirect manner, to apologize more, and to offer softer criticism; they're problem preventers instead of heroic crisis solvers; they generally strive for the appearance of equality with, not superiority to, their co-workers. Many (male) bosses overlook the value of this style. Tannen concludes that women should go with their own approach, but they should also try to be assertive and worry less about being liked than about being competent. Yet in the next breath, she acknowledges that women who act assertive may bring unpleasant consequences on themselves. In the end, she reaches for platitudes, blithely recommending that workers adopt a mix of styles and that managers learn to recognize and appreciate quality in diverse forms. She says ``on that happy day, the glass ceiling will become a looking glass through which a fair percentage of Alices will be able to step.'' Readers of her earlier books will find much that is familiar, from the research to the conclusions. Women facing a hostile work environment and seeking substantive improvements in their situation are likely to find that Tannen's recourse to ``stylistic differences'' ultimately offers little help. I had hoped women had progressed more than Tannen implies. Of course the relationship between men and women is still not perfect, but whenever there are differences, you will have imperfection. Tannen's examples are dated and her observations of women stereotypical. She frequently cites studies, but does not reference the situation or the dates of research.

I was very disappointed. I used this book in one of my graduate level organizational communications class. It certainly lead to a lengthy discussion. The students were angry at the lack of "current" information and the stereotyping.

Dr. Tannen has written several books detailing the effect of gender upon conversational style. This book, specifically, offers insights specific to the work place. The author cites research to substantiate her claims, but she does not bore the reader with scientific paradigms -- she speaks in a language we all can understand. The biggest problem with the book is that it does not seem to flow. Her theories need to be better articulated through the book, and she needs to spend more time making sure that everything does not run together. If you have not read "You just don't understand," and you have a choice between the two books, pick that one. It will give the same information in a more organized way.

Just finished reading this power book on communication and I loved it! It goes into the kinds of detail that women (and men) need to know so that success comes more naturally at work. The author's book is full of relevant facts and theories that are helpful.

I also recommend a book that my company uses in its training programs -- it would be helpful to anyone who wants to integrate her or his skills together as a top performing leader. It's called ""The Leader's Guide: 15 Essential Skills.""

Disappointing
She raises so many issues and offers no way of dealing with them. A professor of linguistics should know that people want to know more than just the issues. Lesen Sie weiter...

I found her research compelling--there is little speculation in this book. It is based on what is actually happening at work, and for that reason, I highly recommend it to anyone... Lesen Sie weiter...
