Author Christina Paul continues her Bradford Series of historical romance novels, this time featuring Christian and Adriana's love story. After leaving a London pub in a rough part of town, Christian is about to mount his horse when he hears a scream. Seeing a damsel in distress, Christian rushes to her defense, quickly dispatches her assailants and throws them in the river. The lady is injured and unconscious. There is nothing else to do but take her home and enlist the aid of butler, Hugh, in caring for the lovely Adriana. The story comes out that her father has been murdered in the fracas, thus the mystery begins. Members of London's secret covert unit assemble to unravel the complex plot involving spies, secret codes, hidden lists, clues written in journals, and French operatives determined to find and murder those few members of the French aristocracy who have escaped the guillotine and fled to England. The story continues into the English countryside, over to Ireland and back again. Christian and Adriana are hopelessly drawn to each other and spend several hot nights in bed, before figuring out they are in love. Sigh.
