YA Animal epics are popular with YAs, and this one should prove no exception. Tailchaser, an orange-and-white striped cat, journeys to find his female friend Hushpad. She, like many of the other cats, has disappeared and the Folk (cats) are worried that something is amiss. Tailchaser realizes the severety of the problem when he is captured by several large cat-like creatures and forced into slavery in a subterranean world. Tailchaser's adventures are often violent but always exciting. Williams has used the language of the animals, both the "Common Language" and the "Higher Singing," but he has included two appendixesa glossary of terms and a descriptive list of characters. A map showing Tailchaser's route will also be of great help to readers. Fantasy lovers will lose their heart to Tailchaser and his companions Pouncequick and Roofshadow. Der erste Roman des berühmten Fantasy-Autors Tad Williams, "Tailchaser's Song" ist ein sehr gelungenes und liebenswertes Buch, welches besonders Katzenfreunde lieben werden.
Die Geschichte dreht sich um den jungen roten Kater Fritti Tailchaser, der sich zwar gern von den Menschen füttern lässt, aber doch das Leben in Freiheit liebt: in einer Katzenwelt, die von Tad Williams auf wunderschöne, detaillierte Weise heraufbeschworen wird. Denn auch wenn Katzen eigentlich Einzelgänger sind, so haben sie doch ihren Treffpunkt bei der Meeting Wall, wo man miteinander plaudert, spielt und Lieder singt. Eines Abends fehlt Tailchasers gute Freundin Hushpad bei dem Treffen. Auch viele andere Katzen sind verschwunden - es tut sich Böses in der Katzenwelt, aber noch kann es niemand benennen. Als Hushpad nach mehreren Tagen immer noch nicht zurück ist, macht sich Tailchaser auf die Suche nach ihr und erlebt in der Folge allerlei gefährliche Abenteuer...
Ich habe die Odyssee dieser mutigen kleinen Katze verschlungen und sehr genossen: liebevoll zeichnet Williams die vielen Charaktere und das Katzenleben nach und erzählt eine spannende Geschichte über Freundschaft, Loyalität und - Gut und Böse. Manche Parallelen zu J.R.R. Tolkiens "Herr der Ringe" sind, glaubt man dem Vorwort Williams', nicht zufällig - einzelne Szenen hat er für "Tailchaser" pardodisierend aufgegriffen. Außerdem kam es mir vor, als hätte auch Joanne Rowling das Buch einmal gelesen und in ihrer "Harry Potter"-Reihe weiterverarbeitet - aber das kann ja auch Zufall sein. :)
Tatsache ist aber: "Tailchaser" ist eine aufregende und süße Geschichte für jung und alt. Besonders Katzenfans werden die Abenteuer des süßen Fritti mit schwitzenden Händen lesen und sollten dieses Buch auf keinen Fall versäumen.

Although it has been almost ten years since I first read this book, I have never forgotten it, perhaps because I was only twelve at the time and picked it off the library shelf because I loved fantasy and cats, and the cover-art caught my eye. But there is more to this book than that, and I do not only realize this now. Tailchaser's Song took me to another world, a cat's world, whose different troubles and excitements, challenges and dreams let Williams' story come alive in a way it otherwise might not have. He is a unique and beautiful writer, with a style that is perfectly uited to this type of fairytale story. The characters are wonderfully drawn, the setting is lush and realistic, and the things the story have to teach us, immense. For all this, however, Tailshaser's Song is not a book I would reccomend letting a twelve year-old read; it has extremely dark elements, disturbing scenes and events. Although it was exactly this which I believe makes Williams' story powerful, it is also the reason it stands out it my mind. For adults this very darkness may hinder taking Tailchaser's Song seriously, and so it seems I am advocating it for the pre-teen crowd, but only those who will appreciate its value.

"Tailchaser's Song" was given to me for Christmas and has been my favorite book for years. I read my first copy so many times the cover fell off. <G> The imagery and description are great--you actually feel as though you're in the tale, living all of the events. There is enough humor in the story to make it light-hearted and realistic, but not so much that you can't take the story seriously. The best part, in my opinion, is "cat hell"--the descriptions of the dank catacombs, brutal guards, and the enveloping hopelessness of the atmosphere make me shudder every time I read the book. The ending comes as a huge surprise, and the climax of the story still makes me grit my teeth. <G> Even though the back cover compares it with "Watership Down", the two are very different (for example, WD takes place in a more human-oriented world; the cats in TCS are not influenced by people like the rabbits in WD are.). A VERY good read, even if you hate cats. =)
