I read Tai-Pan after Shogun and I have to say Shogun is much better.
Tai-Pan is successful in recreating the atmosphere, language and historical background of Hong-Kong, but it fails in crafting a great storyline. The plot seems to be moving in an unclear direction and many plot turns are random and co-incidental. The ending is also a disappointment as it fails to neatly end all the plot lines and many things are left open. For such a long book it is a great flaw. There are however some moments of brilliance and some great characters. All in all, it seemed to me like I was reading a first draft of a novel that needed much editing.

This thoroughly enjoyable historical novel captures the atmosphere of China and Hong Kong in the mid 1800's. Dirk Struan, hero of this adventures, is a strongly written character who you can't help admiring and cheering on. I loved the way Clavell weaved together a compelling story with such descriptive details and historical facts that advance our understanding of characters and events. Because of this book, I read Jonathan Spence's history "God's Chinese Son", which I also recommend. I can't recommend the novel strongly enough for fans of historical fiction

Clavell-Fans werden etwas enttäuscht sein. Dieser zwar durchaus durchdachte Roman kann mit Clavells Erstlingswerk leider nicht mithalten. Er ist kurzweilig zu lesen, aber es fehlt ihm an Tiefe.

Fantastic!
I never thought even Clavell himself could come close to matching Shogun, but he did. This book was great from cover to cover and now ranks #2 on my list of all-time favorites. Lesen Sie weiter...

Best of the series!
The series starts with Shogun, which was wonderful. But the best of the series is Tai-Pan!

The best novel ever written. Hands down.
