Kurzbeschreibung

Not all clowns are nasty, scary, and mean. Many are beautiful, caring, enlightening, loving and—according to Cleone Lyvonne Reed—sacred! This book is more than just a peek into the mind, heart, and soul of a woman who while a mental health counselor became a caring clown and went on a journey into the clown world that transformed her life. Clowning became a vehicle for her to break out of an abusive marriage (while in her forties), heal her wounds, learn her real capacity for giving and receiving love, and for meeting her husband/publisher while in clown.
This extraordinary in-depth exploration of Cleone's journey as a clown and clown teacher not only introduces a new paradigm about clowns, but it also unveils the author’s depth of consciousness in a daringly honest way. Not only did she discover the sacredness of clowning, but of life as well, hence THE SACRED ART OF CLOWNING… and LIFE! was born.
In this book, you will learn a lot about the different types of clowns, what kinds of things caring clowns do, and get a real feel for what it is like to be a clown as Cleone tells her story and her philosophy. There are 67 photos complimenting the many elements of this book. There is also a section of clown illustrations of the twelve universal powers created by Richard Vergara, which Cleone responded to. And a list of 258 clown names.
Cleone has walked in about 30 parades, including The Great Circus Parade in Milwaukee, attended Clown Camp at the University of Wisconsin, and many Clown Conventions/Confabulations. She has had about 500 hours of clown training and has taught numerous clown workshops. So far, 166 people have become clowns (at least for a day) as a result of her work, many becoming caring clowns and some even clown teachers.
As much as anything, though, this book is really about love. Cleone was given the message while in her forties that she did not know how to love. She rebuked that it is very challenging to love someone who is abusive, that the abuse resulted in her doubting her capacity to love, as well as other destructive messages to her self-image. Clowning became a therapeutic vehicle to break out of this marriage and create a whole new life.
When she met her husband Bob for the first time, she was dressed as Chloe the Clown, and they immediately discovered they both knew Patch Adams. Cleone met Patch at a conference and Bob published his book, HOUSE CALLS: HOW WE CAN ALL HEAL THE WORLD ONE VISIT AT A TIME.
Shortly after meeting Bob, and after 10 years of serving as a caring clown and teaching others to be caring clowns, she one day realized that she didn't need to be a clown anymore: she discovered what it was all about. Love. She knew she was good at both giving and receiving love. She had actually created the new life she set out to create. She quit clowning for six years.
Then in 2010, clowning chose her: an opportunity to clown for a cause and then later to put family members into clown was the double invitation she needed to pick up her love of clowning again... and publish this book.
National Clown Week—the first seven days of August—was signed into law on August 2, 1971 (the year Cleone's son was born) by President Nixon and has since grown to be International Clown Week. August 1 is also the anniversary date of Cleone's first date with her husband. Therefore, the launch date of THE SACRED ART OF CLOWNING... and LIFE! for the Kindle edition is August 1, 2011.

I started the book on Friday and finished it on Sunday. I found our upbringings and marriage to be similar. I am so pleased you shared your tidbits for there were alot of 'golden gems' to gleam from and use.
Thank you for making a positive and uplifting difference in the world because of your education and your clowning. You ARE a blessing to all of us!

First, I must confess that I know the author and her husband, and I have long admired their hilarious and joyful approach to life. When the "going gets rough" they turn it into humor. What a fine art form for our troubled world. Oh the beauty of it, oh the fun.
In her new book "The Sacred Art of Clowning...and Life!" Cleone expresses so many wonderful things about life and survival that it's hard to say what I like the most. Heck, I'll admit it, I love the pictures and have looked at them many times since the book arrived, especially the picture of Bob in clown. Writing a memoir is certainly a difficult project, and making it universal in appeal is even more difficult. Cleone has done a fine job in both aspects of her book.
In the spirit of "The Sacred Art of Clowning...and Life!" I urge everyone reading this to go forth and do something unexpected, something completely silly, that will bring a smile to another's face. Let's all strive to create a better world--one smile at a time!
