Some are sleek and minimal, others unashamedly plush and traditionally luxurious; whether you prefer a secluded rural retreat or the pulsing center of the urban experience, you'll find a room - or suite - to your taste. However, what all these establishments share is personality, atmosphere, sophistication, and a great location. Similarly, though their rooms range from modest to extravagant, all of them represent excellent value, no matter which end of the price scale, from two to five star hotels. The eclectic mix includes the romantic hotel Spielweg in Germany's Black Forest, where everyone should spend Christmas once in their life; the secret jewel Ksar Char-Bagh in Marrakech; and, the Al Mamlouka in the middle of Damascus, and the most exquisite Spa hotel in Jordan, the Evason Ma'In. Other highlights are the Shigar Fort Residence, a 400-year old palace saved and restored by the Aga Khan Foundation in Northern Pakistan; a sensitively restored 1930's colonial guest house called Boddhi Tree Del El Gusto, in Pnomh Phen, for less than US$40 a night; or the outstanding Corbusier-style beach villas in Kep, Cambodia, called Knai Bang Chatt resort. To get away from it all there's Richard Gere's Bedford Post in upstate New York, or the Golden Rock Estate on the Caribbean island of Nevis, owned by American artist Brice Marden. Finally, nobody who has stayed there will ever forget the stunning Remota, surrounded by the mountains, lakes and glaciers of Chilean Patagonia.
Über den Autor
Angelika Taschen studied art history and German literature in Heidelberg, gaining her doctorate in 1986. Working for TASCHEN since 1987, she has published numerous titles on art, architecture, photography, design, travel, and lifestyle. Christiane Reiter is a freelance author based in Hamburg. She studied journalism at the University of Eichstatt and worked as a travel editor for Ringier Publishing in Munich and Zurich. She then established the travel section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.

So you think you know hotels? Sure, you've read all the books - the Conde Nast Traveler's annual Gold List, etc. After all, you've been to Bora Bora and St. Barths.
Forget it.
Angelika Taschen's been there, too - and beyond. Way beyond.
In "Taschen's Favorite Hotels, Volume 1' you will not find any of the usual suspects. No Four Seasons in this book. No Mandarin Orientals here. Nothing but a book packed with some of the most unusual, remote and exotic accommodations anywhere on the planet.
Favoring locales from Madagascar to Morocco, from South Africa to Syria, the Taschen doyenne has ferreted out a series of establishments that are mostly rustic, boutique and about as earthy as anything you've seen on the planet. This is not to say that these locations are lacking in style, features or class but that they are just not commercialized in the general sense of what typically passes for the better marketed worldwide resorts.
Like every Taschen book, the photographs are everything and `TFH' does not disappoint. The rich colors, exteriors, locations and interiors are amply depicted herein. The strength of this book however is the choice of locations itself. No other upscale book offers this selection of high-calibre but lesser known facilities (among the U.S. choices are such lower profile places as Tuscon's colorful Hotel Congress and the trailer-based El Cosmico in Marfa, Texas.) With all of the virtually unknown gems presented here, we already can't wait for the promised Volume Two.

While I am looking for ideas to improve my home, the book Favourite Hotels came across as an outstanding resource.
The hotels are very well chosen -interiors (and exteriors) are beautiful, chic, de bon gout!- and away from the main stream. The images are stunning.
