Just for Fun: Swingin' Jazz Mandolin (Just for Fun (Alfred)) is a well-chosen selection of standards from the Great American Songbook. This low-intermediate level player found the collection to be thoughtfully-arranged, and just challenging enough to provoke me into mastering the clearly diagramed and grouped swing jazz chord shapes used. Getting these tunes under my fingers has increased my comfort and fluency with new chords, as well as how to blend chords with the melody line; and it provided a great ride along the way. A perfect companion book for developing chord-melody skills is "The Beatles for Mandolin," yet another collection of familiar songs that are well-arranged, a fun way to learn higher level skills, and satisfyingly close, in sound, to the original recordings. Come to think of it, why am I writing this when I could be playing Beatles or Swing on my mandolin ?
