The Bear Family label truly has to be praised for these 'Sweet Soul Music' series. On one CD, they gather some of the best R&B/soul hits of every year between 1961 and 1970. Some heavy weights such as Sam Cooke and Ray Charles do not make the cut due to their respective labels but almost every other genuinely valuable artist of the era gets at least one track (Motown, Stax, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Jackie Wilson but also various one-hit wonders etc.). Liner notes are excellent and -- of course -- most of the music is of the kind you send in outer space for ETs to listen to. Year 1964 is especially outstanding as genuine 'Soul' really begins to take hold of the US R&B (and Pop) charts. So what you get here is more than 80 minutes of masterpieces. 'Dancing In The Streets': how can you better that? Even The Beatles couldn't. Only Rhino Records or Soul Jazz manage to come up with such masterful compilations.
