A fine mix of blues, rock and pop, 21. September 2004
Bonnie has demonstrated through the years that she can sing many different styles of music, all of them brilliantly - mainly blues and rock but also including pop, folk and even (on the Urban cowboy soundtrack) some country. This album does not show everything that Bonnie can do but it shows most of her major influences. The most famous song here is surely Runaway, a cover of Del Shannon's early sixties classic. Yet the song is almost unrecognisable compared to the original, which was a typical slice of rock'n'roll. Bonnie re-interprets the song, slowing it down to convert it to a blues-rock ballad. It works brilliantly and was an American hit for Bonnie. Bonnie has sometimes been compared to Linda Ronstadt. I regard them as very different singers but there are a few songs that both of them have recorded. On this album, you can hear one of these songs, Louise. However, Linda recorded the song on one of her early albums so her own music had changed quite a lot by the time Bonnie recorded the song. Elsewhere, Bonnie delivers fine versions of Three time loser (Don Covay), Taking my time (Little Feat), Home (Karla Bonoff), Gambling man (Eric Kaz) and My opening farewell (Jackson Brown). This is a fascinating album that all Bonnie Raitt fans should own.
