Superb all-around gingerbread house and cookie book 7. Januar 2010
Von jumpy1 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I thought this book was going to scare me. Jann Johnson is a super crafty person and her creations are very perfectionistic (is that a word?). After reading it along with all the other books on gingerbread I've looked through this year, though, I've decided that this book may be over 20 years old but it is still highly relevant. Of course, we're talking about gingerbread, which is old anyway. But this is really a gingerbread book plus cookie icing tutorial. You know those scarily perfect iced cookies they sell at gourmet stores? She has all the info you need to do that, no matter what your level of experience. Plus, a very cute gingerbread train, castle, houses for Christmas and Thanksgiving, wreaths, a lovely creche and Christmas tree, rocking horse, etc. as well as very detailed people and animal cookie templates. And what I mean by detailed, these templates are complete with decoration so you know where to put pricks before you bake to guide your icing. Yet with all the detail, the shapes are all very simple and child-like, they're just the kind of simple and sweet things that delight children (as opposed the Teresa Layman's designs which are just off-the-charts complicated to imitate!) Now, I have other cookie icing books but for some reason I like the way she explains things and I like her illustrative drawings. It makes me feel like I'm with her, in a class. Also, she tells you how to make a paper cone, how to set up your icing bags, etc. illustrated with her own drawings. So, even if you've never baked and decorated before, you wouldn't need another guide if you read through this first. The dough recipes, which I didn't try because I didn't need a new recipe, look delicious and are apparently very sturdy according to a recent study by engineering students using gingerbread as a building material (yes they did!). In short, this book is pretty amazing. If I were going to give one as a gift to someone who likes to bake, I'd probably give this one.

From The Inside Flap: 2. November 2005

Jan Johnson works magic with gingerbread.....and now you can too! SWEET DREAMS OF GINGERBREAD will show you how to create 40 eye-catching, taste-tempting gingerbread delights.

You'll find imaginative ways to "dress up" old-fashioned gingerbread boys and girls in sweet winter togs or scumptious fancy dress for extra-special party cookies. And you'll discover that gingerbread cookies come in all shapes and sizes: charming musical instruments, an adorable teddy bear family, spunky cowboys and Indians, and a fairytale prince and princess.

Jann's three-dimensional projects are real show-stoppers - imagine the glorious Royal Castle as the centerpiece at a youngster's birthday party. The classic House is perfect for any occasion, and for variations on the theme there's a miniature Swiss Chalet dripping with snowy white icing and Shaker Saltbox house decorated with pilgrim and pumplin cookies for Thanksgiving.

Gingerbread may become a family tradition at Christmastime, once the candy-covered Gumdrop Express stops at your home on Christmas morning. Make the fabulous three-dimensional Rocking Horse or Christmas Tree centerpiece to decorate your table, and choose from sixteen whimsical cookie designs to decorate your tree.

But there's no need to save gingerbread just for Christmas. Jan had designed projects for Easter, Halloween, and Valentine's Day and plenty more that are suitable for birthday parties, baby showers, or delicious after-school treats.

Every project is photographed in color to show you just how it should look when it's complete. Plenty of full-size patterns make cookie-cutting a breeze, and Jann's illustrations help you through the tricky techniques. Just follow the easy-to-understand instructions and before long you'll be decorating like a pro and creating your own sweet dreams of gingerbread.
